What this route typically costs
Critical points
Zambia's presence on CFIA's high-risk-for-dog-rabies list, updated 13 March 2025, does not add a titre test or an import permit for a personal, owner-accompanied pet. The list's real effect is the commercial dog import ban in force since September 2022. Confirm your pet qualifies as personal before assuming the light process applies.
No airline flies Lusaka to Toronto or Montreal nonstop. Ethiopian Airlines' own Toronto-Addis Ababa-Lusaka routing keeps it to one carrier; the South African Airways alternative via Johannesburg needs a separate transatlantic connection.
Zambia has no confirmed government-approved rabies serology laboratory of its own, which matters if a transiting country or connecting airline further along the route asks for a titre result anyway. Build in courier time if that comes up, even though Canada itself doesn't require the test.
Approved carriers for this route
Not all airlines accept live animals. We book only with carriers that handle live animal cargo correctly.

Getting the details right
Work backwards from your travel date and add a buffer. Fixed waiting periods mean a single slipped appointment can push the whole move back by weeks.
Check the airline’s crate size and labelling rules early. An undersized or wrongly labelled crate is a frequent reason pets are refused at check-in.
Ask about temperature embargoes for your travel window. Summer and winter cargo restrictions can rule out certain routes and dates entirely.
Microchip before you vaccinate. The microchip must be in place before the rabies shot for the vaccination to count, and getting this order wrong is the most common and costly mistake.
