Critical points
The 180-day wait runs from the blood draw date for the FAVN titre test, not from the date you receive the results. Starting the titre test process too late is the most common reason USA-to-Korea moves are delayed. Begin at least 7-8 months before your travel date.
Korean Air allows small pets in the cabin, which is a significant advantage for owners of small dogs or cats. The pet plus cage must not exceed 7 kg and must fit under the seat.
10-day quarantine applies to all dogs and cats on arrival, regardless of documentation quality. This is shorter than Japan's 14-day quarantine but still requires advance planning and budget.
If your pet has a failed titre test result (below 0.5 IU/ml), you must re-vaccinate and restart the titre test process, adding months to your timeline.
United Airlines PetSafe cargo is currently suspended for general public bookings. Plan around Korean Air, Asiana, American or Delta instead.
Understanding South Korea's titre test requirement
South Korea, like Japan, requires a FAVN (Fluorescent Antibody Virus Neutralization) titre test to verify that your pet has a sufficient level of rabies antibodies before entry. The minimum acceptable result is 0.5 IU/ml. The 180-day wait period begins from the date the blood is drawn, not from the test result date.
Before the blood draw, your pet needs to have been vaccinated against rabies. Most vets recommend two vaccinations at least 30 days apart, with the blood draw happening at least 30 days after the second vaccination. Working backwards from a planned move date, this means you should start the process at least 7-8 months beforehand.
Once the titre test result is in and the 180-day period has elapsed, the remaining steps (APQA permit, health certificate, cargo booking) can be completed in the final 4-8 weeks before travel.
Cabin travel on Korean Air
Korean Air allows small dogs and cats in the passenger cabin on international routes. The pet plus cage must weigh no more than 7 kg and the carrier must fit under the seat in front of you. This is a notable advantage for owners of small pets, as cabin travel avoids the stress of the cargo hold. Book the cabin pet space when you book your own seat; cabin spots are limited.
Asiana Airlines also offers cabin pet travel on qualifying routes. For larger pets that exceed the cabin weight limit, both Korean Air and Asiana offer cargo hold services with IATA-compliant crate requirements.
