What this route typically costs
Critical points
Both USDA endorsement and Qatari embassy attestation must be completed sequentially before travel. Allow 2-4 weeks total for both steps after the health certificate is issued.
Qatar bans the import of American Pit Bull Terriers, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentinos, and Fila Brasileiros. Confirm your dog is not one of these breeds.
The health certificate is typically valid for 14 days from issue date for Qatar entry. Coordinate timing so the certificate does not expire before arrival.
The MECC permit must be in hand before departure. Apply well in advance.
Approved carriers for this route
Not all airlines accept live animals. We book only with carriers that handle live animal cargo correctly.
Two layers of US documentation
Getting a health certificate accepted in Qatar from the US requires two steps that most owners encounter for the first time. The first is USDA APHIS endorsement: your USDA-accredited veterinarian completes the health certificate, which you then submit to the USDA APHIS regional office for official endorsement. This takes three to ten business days and adds a federal stamp confirming the vet’s credentials.
The second step is Qatari embassy attestation. The endorsed certificate must then go to the Qatari embassy in Washington DC, which attests it for Qatari authorities. Allow one to two weeks for the embassy. The two steps are sequential, so plan on two to four weeks from health certificate issuance to having all documentation ready.
One timing constraint to watch: Qatar typically requires the health certificate to have been issued within 14 days of arrival. That means the OV signs the certificate, it goes to USDA APHIS, then to the embassy, and your flight departs, all within approximately two weeks. Many owners find this tight and use express USDA processing to give themselves more margin.
Qatar's breed restrictions
Qatar prohibits the import of American Pit Bull Terriers, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentinos, and Fila Brasileiros. These restrictions apply to confirmed purebreds and mixes of these types. Before starting any process, confirm that your dog does not fall into one of these categories.
Staffordshire Bull Terriers are not on the Qatari banned list and can be imported. If your dog is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, ask your vet to state the breed clearly on the health certificate to avoid confusion with the banned Pit Bull Terrier type. Ambiguous breed identification can cause delays at Hamad International Airport.
Qatar Airways JFK to Doha: the practical route
Qatar Airways Cargo operates direct JFK to Doha services and is the most straightforward option for this route. The Hamad International Airport cargo facility in Doha is modern, with climate-controlled live animal handling. This reduces the risks associated with heat or cold during ground handling.
For cat owners, Qatar Airways permits small cats in-cabin on some international routes. Check with the airline for specific in-cabin eligibility on the JFK-Doha segment when booking, as this can reduce the stress of a long cargo journey for cats.
