Pet Transport USA to Australia: The Complete 2026 Guide
The USA to Australia pet move is one of the longest and most document-intensive routes in the world. Your dog or cat will need a titre test, a 180-day waiting period, a DAFF import permit, and a 10-day quarantine stay in Melbourne on arrival. Start this …

What this route typically costs
Critical points
The 180-day wait after the titre test is mandatory with no exceptions. Begin this process at minimum 7 months before your intended travel date.
USA is classified as Group 4 by DAFF, which is a higher-risk classification than the UK (Group 3). The titre test and quarantine requirements are the same, but the permit process may require additional documentation.
United Airlines has suspended its PetSafe cargo program for the general public. Do not book United for this route.
Quarantine at Mickleham must be pre-booked before departure. Arriving without a confirmed booking will cause delays and additional costs.
The DAFF import permit must be in place before the pet departs the US. Permits are not issued retrospectively.
Approved carriers for this route
Not all airlines accept live animals. We book only with carriers that handle live animal cargo correctly.
USA vs UK: how the DAFF classification affects you
Australia classifies origin countries into groups (Group 1 through Group 5) based on their rabies and disease risk profile. The United States is Group 4, while the UK is Group 3. In practice, the difference for pet owners is minimal: both groups require a titre test, a 180-day waiting period, a DAFF import permit, and a 10-day quarantine.
The Group 4 classification means the import permit application process may require slightly more supporting documentation, and DAFF may take longer to process permits from Group 4 countries. Apply early: 6-8 weeks before travel is the minimum, and earlier is better.
Cats and dogs from the USA face the same requirements. There is no federal US regulation on pet exports beyond the USDA-endorsed health certificate, so all the documentation complexity sits on the Australian side of the process.
The USDA APHIS health certificate and why it takes longer than you expect
The health certificate for a USA to Australia pet move must be in DAFF-approved format, completed by a USDA-accredited veterinarian (not just any vet), and endorsed by USDA APHIS Veterinary Services.
The USDA endorsement step takes 2-10 business days depending on how you submit. Electronic submission through the Veterinary Export Health Certification System (VEHCS) is faster; mail submission is slower. Given that the health certificate must be issued within 10 days of travel (the examination must fall within 10 days of the departure date), timing the USDA endorsement is important.
Most owners use the following approach: vet examination on day 1 or 2 before travel, immediate electronic submission to USDA APHIS, with enough time buffer for endorsement to come back before departure. Discuss the process with your USDA-accredited vet before confirming your travel date.
The Mickleham quarantine facility
All animals arriving in Australia complete quarantine at the Post Entry Quarantine facility in Mickleham, Victoria, approximately 30km north of Melbourne. There is currently no alternative facility; all pets entering Australia arrive in Melbourne regardless of their Australian destination.
The 10-day stay is the minimum. Animals are held individually in climate-controlled kennels or cat units. The facility operates 365 days a year. Owners cannot visit during quarantine, but DAFF provides updates.
Book your quarantine space as soon as your titre test result is confirmed satisfactory. Do not wait until you are finalising travel plans. Space fills up significantly during peak relocation periods, and arriving without a confirmed booking creates delays and costs.
