Requirements
Tajikistan entry requirements
Every item below must be in place before your pet can enter. We verify and track each one.
Microchip
Not required by Tajikistan, though recommended: an ISO 11784/11785-compliant microchip, with the number recorded on the certificate if fitted.
Rabies vaccination
Required. Current rabies vaccination given between 30 days and 12 months before entry. Puppies and kittens cannot be vaccinated before 12 weeks of age and must then wait a further 30 days before travel.
Rabies titre test
Not required. Tajikistan does not mandate a rabies antibody titre test on a pet arriving from any country, including the UK. This mirrors the position for Kyrgyzstan and stands in sharp contrast to the reverse direction: a Tajikistan-origin pet entering the UK needs the full unlisted-country titre protocol and a 90-day wait.
Quarantine
No quarantine for compliant arrivals. Non-compliant pets face a harder line than several neighbouring Central Asian states take: quarantine, return to the country of origin, or in the most serious cases euthanasia, entirely at the owner's expense.
Import permit
Not required for an owner travelling with their own dog or cat.
Health certificate
Veterinary health certificate issued close to the date of travel by a licensed vet, confirming good health, freedom from infectious disease and no unhealed wounds, endorsed by a government veterinarian before departure.
Leaving United Kingdom
Export requirements
Export permit
An export application (EXA) is submitted to APHA alongside the certificate request; there is no separate standalone export permit for a companion pet.
Veterinary inspection
Clinical examination by an APHA-authorised Official Veterinarian (OV), confirming the pet is fit to travel and meets Tajikistan's stated health conditions.
Government endorsement
Only an APHA-authorised OV can issue and sign the Export Health Certificate (EHC). Applications submitted more than 7 working days ahead are processed 7 working days before the certification date. Health certificate
Bilingual Export Health Certificate confirming microchip (if fitted), rabies vaccination and general health, valid for a limited window around the travel date, typically 10 days under APHA's own rules.
Costs
What this route typically costs
APHA Official Veterinarian consultation and Export Health Certificate: GBP 200-400
Microchip (if not already fitted) and rabies vaccination if not current: GBP 40-90
IATA-compliant travel crate: GBP 70-250
Cargo agent or PetAir UK handling fee for the export booking: GBP 600-1,400
Air cargo or cabin fee, Heathrow to Dushanbe via Istanbul or Almaty: GBP 800-2,200 depending on crate size and season
Total typical range: GBP 1,700-4,200
Critical points
Tajikistan takes a harder line on non-compliance than several of its neighbours: quarantine, return to the country of origin, or in the most serious cases euthanasia, at the owner's expense. There is no titre test here, but getting the paperwork exactly right matters more than on most routes.
There is no direct flight between London and Dushanbe. Realistic routing runs via Istanbul on Turkish Airlines or via Almaty on Air Astana.
Somon Air, Tajikistan's national carrier, said in July 2026 it plans to add a London route, but gave no start date. Do not set a travel date around an announced but unstarted service.

Airline
Notes
Type
Turkish Airlines
Heathrow to Istanbul, connecting to around seven flights a week from Istanbul to Dushanbe. Small pets in the cabin under 8kg with carrier; larger pets via Turkish Cargo. Brachycephalic breeds face cargo restrictions.
Cabin and Cargo
Air Astana
Nonstop Heathrow-Almaty on an A321LR, connecting to Air Astana's own Almaty-Dushanbe service, which runs around five times a week. A genuine one-change alternative to routing via Istanbul.
Cabin and Cargo
British Airways
No service to Dushanbe or Almaty. BA enters the picture only as the UK-side export leg, through its cargo partner PetAir UK, for owners arranging departure via IAG Cargo before connecting onward separately.
Cargo Only
Emirates
Emirates SkyCargo covers the Heathrow-Dubai leg, connecting to Somon Air's Dubai-Dushanbe service. Seasonal Gulf heat embargoes can affect the Dubai transfer in summer months.
Cargo Only
Somon Air
Tajikistan's national carrier currently flies Dushanbe to Moscow, Istanbul, Dubai, Munich, Jeddah, Tehran and Delhi, among others, none of them the UK. In July 2026 the airline said it plans to add London, but gave no start date, so do not book a pet move around an unconfirmed route.

How Tajikistan handles incoming pets
Tajikistan has a clear set of import requirements that are manageable with some planning. Follow them in order and keep an eye on the dates that cannot move.
What experienced owners do
Confirm live animal acceptance on every flight segment before booking. Not all aircraft or connections take pets, and cargo terms can differ leg to leg.
Keep every original document together and take copies. Border officials want originals, and a missing signature or date can hold up clearance.
Work backwards from your travel date and add a buffer. Fixed waiting periods mean a single slipped appointment can push the whole move back by weeks.
Check the airline’s crate size and labelling rules early. An undersized or wrongly labelled crate is a frequent reason pets are refused at check-in.
FAQ
Common questions about this route
No. Tajikistan does not require a rabies antibody titre test from a pet arriving from any country. This is the reverse of the situation for a Tajikistan-origin pet entering the UK, which needs the full titre protocol and a 90-day wait.
Tajikistan takes a harder line than several neighbouring countries: a non-compliant pet can face quarantine, be returned to the country of origin, or in the most serious cases be euthanised, all at the owner’s expense. Get every document checked before departure rather than relying on a fix at the airport.
No. There is no direct service. The realistic options are Turkish Airlines via Istanbul or Air Astana via Almaty, both of which run limited weekly capacity into Dushanbe.
At least 12 weeks old. Tajikistan then requires a further 30-day wait after vaccination before the pet can enter the country, so factor this into your timeline from the outset if you’re travelling with a young animal.
Not for a UK departure. Somon Air does not currently serve the UK, despite announcing plans in July 2026 to add a London route. It flies to Moscow, Istanbul, Dubai, Munich, Jeddah, Tehran and Delhi, none of which help for this specific journey.
