Critical points

GB pet passports are not accepted for entry into Switzerland post-Brexit. An Animal Health Certificate is required for each journey, even if your old GB passport has a current rabies vaccination recorded in it.

SWISS allows small dogs and cats (max 8 kg including the carrier) in the cabin on direct Heathrow to Zurich flights. This is a comfortable and low-stress option for small pets. Book cabin space at the same time as your own seat.

Switzerland does not quarantine pets with correct documentation. No import permit is needed. This makes it one of the simpler routes from the UK.

The AHC is valid for 10 days from issue for international entry. It cannot be reused: each journey from the UK to Switzerland requires a new certificate.

British Airways does not allow cabin pets on any international route. For BA travellers, pets go via IAG Cargo.

Post-Brexit: why the AHC replaced the GB pet passport

Before Brexit, UK-issued pet passports were valid for travel between the UK and Switzerland (which, while not an EU member, aligned with EU pet travel rules). After Brexit, Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales) is no longer part of the EU pet travel area. GB-issued pet passports are not recognised by Switzerland for new journeys.

Instead, each trip from Great Britain to Switzerland now requires an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) issued by an APHA-authorised Official Veterinarian within 10 days of travel. The core animal requirements are unchanged: an ISO microchip implanted before the rabies vaccination, and at least 21 days passed since the primary vaccination course.

The AHC is valid for 10 days from the issue date for international travel and cannot be reused. If you travel to Switzerland and then return to the UK, you will need a new AHC for the return journey.

SWISS cabin travel from London

Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) operates direct routes from London Heathrow and London City to Zurich. SWISS allows small dogs and cats in the passenger cabin (maximum 8 kg including the carrier, which must fit under the seat). The cabin fee is typically CHF 75 to CHF 120 each way, making it an affordable option compared to cargo fees for small pets.

Notify SWISS at the time of booking that you are travelling with a cabin pet. Cabin pet spaces are limited per flight. For small cats and dogs, cabin travel on the approximately 2-hour Heathrow to Zurich flight is far less stressful than a cargo hold journey.

British Airways operates the same route but does not allow cabin pets on any international flight. BA travellers use IAG Cargo for pet transport.

FAQ

Common questions

No. GB-issued pet passports are not accepted for travel from Great Britain to Switzerland post-Brexit. Each journey from the UK to Switzerland requires an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) issued by an APHA-authorised Official Veterinarian within 10 days of travel. The vaccinations recorded in the old passport remain valid as records, but the GB passport document itself is no longer accepted by Switzerland for entry.
No. Switzerland does not quarantine companion animals arriving with correct documentation. With an ISO microchip, a current rabies vaccination (21-day wait complete), and a valid Animal Health Certificate, your pet enters Switzerland without quarantine or an import permit. This is a significant advantage compared to routes like Japan or Australia.
Yes, on SWISS. Swiss International Air Lines allows small dogs and cats in the cabin (maximum 8 kg including the carrier) on direct London to Zurich flights. Book the cabin pet space when you book your own seat. British Airways, which also operates this route, does not allow cabin pets and requires pets to travel via IAG Cargo.
No. Switzerland does not require a rabies titre test from pets arriving from the UK with a current, valid rabies vaccination and an AHC. The UK is treated as a recognised country for Swiss import purposes. The 21-day post-vaccination wait and the ISO microchip requirement must be met, but there is no titre test requirement.
If your pet’s microchip and rabies vaccination are current (21-day wait complete), allow 4-6 weeks for the health certificate appointment and cargo or cabin booking. The most time-sensitive element is arranging the AHC appointment with an APHA-authorised Official Veterinarian within 10 days of travel. SWISS cabin spaces fill quickly from London, so book your seat and the pet space together as early as possible.
