Pet Transport UK to Qatar: 2026 Process and MECC Requirements

What this route typically costs
Critical points
Qatar bans the import of American Pit Bull Terriers, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentinos, and Fila Brasileiros. Confirm your dog's breed is not on the banned list before starting the process.
Embassy attestation is mandatory and adds 2 weeks to the process. Do not leave it until the last moment.
The health certificate is only valid for 14 days from the date of issue. Your travel must happen within this window. Coordinate with the Qatari embassy attestation timing carefully.
The MECC permit is valid for a fixed period. Confirm the exact validity window with MECC when applying, as this determines how far in advance you should apply.
Approved carriers for this route
Not all airlines accept live animals. We book only with carriers that handle live animal cargo correctly.
MECC permit and the embassy attestation step
Qatar’s Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC) issues the import permit for incoming pets. Apply at least four weeks before your planned travel date via the MECC portal, or through a Doha-based pet agent who handles this regularly.
The health certificate adds an extra step that many first-time movers underestimate: it must be attested by the Qatari embassy in London before it is accepted at Hamad International Airport. The attestation process takes approximately two weeks and carries a separate fee. Because the health certificate itself is only valid for 14 days from the date your Official Veterinarian signs it, you need to coordinate carefully: the OV issues the certificate, it goes to the embassy the same day, and it returns in time for your flight within the 14-day window.
For a flight leaving on a Friday, for example, the OV should issue the certificate no earlier than the Monday of the previous week, with embassy submission on the same Monday or Tuesday. If the timing slips, the certificate expires and must be reissued.
Breed restrictions to check before you start
Qatar prohibits the import of American Pit Bull Terriers, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentinos, and Fila Brasileiros. These restrictions apply to purebreds and confirmed mixes. If your dog is one of these breeds, it cannot enter Qatar. There is no appeal or exemption for companion animals.
For all other breeds, including Staffordshire Bull Terriers (which are often confused with Pit Bulls but are a different breed), Qatar entry is permitted with the correct documentation. If you are at all uncertain about your dog’s breed classification, ask your vet for written confirmation on the health certificate.
Qatar Airways: the practical choice
Qatar Airways Cargo operates direct London Heathrow to Doha services and is the most practical option for this route. The airline’s cargo division regularly handles live animal transport. British Airways also flies direct on this route with cargo pet services via PetAir UK.
Qatar’s modern airport infrastructure, including climate-controlled cargo facilities, means that temperature embargoes are less of an issue than at some open-tarmac airports elsewhere in the Gulf. Summer heat can still affect cargo availability, but Hamad International Airport’s facilities reduce the risk. Confirm live animal cargo availability for your specific departure date regardless.
