Step by step

The United Kingdom to Mongolia import process

01
Before any rabies vaccination
Microchip your pet (ISO 11784/11785), if not already fitted

Responsible: UK vet

02
At least 21 days before travel
Rabies vaccination given, or a current booster confirmed

Responsible: UK vet

03
6-8 weeks ahead; Ulaanbaatar's international schedule is thin
Book routing via Frankfurt (MIAT) or Istanbul (MIAT/Turkish Airlines)

Responsible: You or your pet transport agent

04
Ideally more than 7 working days before the intended certification date
APHA Official Veterinarian booked and export application (EXA) submitted

Responsible: Owner, with the nominated OV

05
Within the certificate's validity window before travel, commonly 10 days
Export Health Certificate examination and issue

Responsible: APHA-authorised OV

06
Once the certificate date and flight are aligned
Cargo booking confirmed with British Airways/PetAir UK to Frankfurt or Istanbul, then onward to Ulaanbaatar

Responsible: You / pet relocation agent

07
On landing
Arrival inspection at Chinggis Khaan International Airport; documents and microchip checked

Responsible: Mongolian veterinary officials

Requirements

Mongolia entry requirements

Every item below must be in place before your pet can enter. We verify and track each one.

Microchip
ISO 11784/11785 microchip required in practice, since the chip number has to appear on the export certificate presented at the border, implanted before the rabies vaccination.
Rabies vaccination
Required, given between 30 days and 12 months before arrival.
Rabies titre test
Not required for a pet entering Mongolia, whatever its country of origin. This is a genuine asymmetry worth knowing before you travel: the 3-month wait that applies when a pet later re-enters the UK from Mongolia (because Mongolia is unlisted for UK purposes) has no equivalent going the other way. Getting a pet into Mongolia is the easy half of any return trip.
Quarantine
No quarantine for pets arriving with a complete, compliant certificate. Facilities for holding non-compliant animals are limited, so an incomplete document risks the pet being refused entry rather than simply delayed.
Import permit
Not required for a personal pet travelling with its owner. Only commercial imports of animals need a separate import permit.
Health certificate
The UK Export Health Certificate, checked on arrival by veterinary officials at Chinggis Khaan International Airport, serves as the import document.
Leaving United Kingdom

Export requirements

Export permit
An export application (EXA) is submitted to APHA alongside the certificate request; there is no separate standalone export permit for a companion pet.
Veterinary inspection
Clinical examination by an APHA-authorised Official Veterinarian (OV), confirming the pet is fit to travel and meets Mongolia's stated health conditions.
Government endorsement
Only an APHA-authorised OV can issue and sign the Export Health Certificate (EHC). Applications submitted more than 7 working days ahead are processed 7 working days before the certification date. Source: GOV.UK, 'Taking your pet dog, cat or ferret abroad: Getting an animal health certificate,' 2026.
Health certificate
Bilingual Export Health Certificate confirming microchip, rabies vaccination and general health, valid for a limited window around the travel date, typically 10 days.
Costs

What this route typically costs

APHA Official Veterinarian consultation and Export Health Certificate: GBP 200-400
Microchip and rabies vaccination, if not already current: GBP 40-90
IATA-compliant travel crate: GBP 70-250
PetAir UK or agent handling for the export booking: GBP 600-1,400
Air cargo Heathrow to Ulaanbaatar via Frankfurt or Istanbul: GBP 700-1,900 depending on crate size and season
Total typical range: GBP 1,600-3,900

Critical points

There is no direct UK-Mongolia service. Every routing goes via Frankfurt or Istanbul on MIAT's own network, or via Istanbul on Turkish Airlines, and scheduled capacity is thin enough that a 6-8 week booking window is sensible rather than the 3-4 weeks that might work on a busier route.

MIAT's cargo-hold brachycephalic exclusion list runs to 18 breeds, longer than most international carriers', and includes some dogs not everyone thinks of as flat-faced, such as Cane Corso and Dogue de Bordeaux. Check your specific breed before booking.

Mongolia doesn't require a titre test or import permit for a personal pet, which makes the outbound leg genuinely simple. Don't let that lull you into assuming the return trip, if you're ever bringing the pet back to the UK, will be equally straightforward: Mongolia is unlisted under UK rules, so a titre test and 3-month wait apply on the way back.

Verify current requirements directly with GAVS or a receiving vet before booking flights. Country-level guidance for this route is thinner than for most destinations on this site.

The rules for bringing a pet into Mongolia

Mongolia has a detailed set of import rules, and each one needs to be satisfied before travel. None of it is unusual, but the order and timing are what catch people out.

How to keep this move on track

If this is your first international move, consider an IPATA-registered pet transport agent. They handle the documents, airline booking and crate sizing, and can troubleshoot problems.

Get your pet used to the travel crate weeks in advance. A calm, crate-familiar animal travels far better than one meeting the crate for the first time at the airport.

Confirm live animal acceptance on every flight segment before booking. Not all aircraft or connections take pets, and cargo terms can differ leg to leg.

Keep every original document together and take copies. Border officials want originals, and a missing signature or date can hold up clearance.

FAQ

Common questions about this route

No. Mongolia does not require a titre test for pets entering the country from any origin, including the UK. The standard microchip, rabies vaccination and UK Export Health Certificate are sufficient.
No, not for a personal pet travelling with its owner. Mongolia only requires a separate import permit for commercial animal imports.
No. The realistic routing goes via Frankfurt or Istanbul on MIAT Mongolian Airlines’ own long-haul network, or via Istanbul with Turkish Airlines. British Airways covers the UK-side leg to either hub via its cargo partner PetAir UK.
No. Mongolia is classified as unlisted under UK pet travel rules, so a return trip needs a rabies titre test and a fixed 3-month wait after a passing result, on top of the standard microchip, vaccination and health certificate. Start that process well ahead of any planned return date.
MIAT Mongolian Airlines excludes 18 brachycephalic breeds from its cargo hold, including some dogs not everyone would flag as flat-faced, such as Cane Corso and Dogue de Bordeaux. Turkish Airlines excludes brachycephalic breeds from both cabin and hold. Check your specific breed against the current list before booking.
