Critical points
The AHC is a one-use document. Once used for travel it cannot be reused for a subsequent trip. A new AHC is needed for each journey.
Both tick treatment and tapeworm treatment must be recorded in the AHC by the same APHA-authorised vet. Timing is critical: tapeworm is 24-120 hours before arrival, tick is 24-48 hours before arrival. Co-ordinate both treatments so they fall within their windows and can be recorded together.
Cyprus has a restricted breed list that includes Pit Bull Terrier type dogs. If your dog is of a breed that may be classified as Pit Bull type, seek clarification from Cyprus Veterinary Services before starting the process.
Not all airlines flying to Cyprus accept pets in the hold. Charter airlines (TUI, Jet2) typically do not. Confirm with the airline before booking your flight.
The AHC and Cyprus's two treatment requirements
The Animal Health Certificate is issued by an APHA-authorised vet and covers everything Cyprus requires: proof of microchip, current rabies vaccination, and the treatment records. For dogs, that means both treatments recorded correctly, because Cyprus inspects documents carefully at the border inspection post.
Timing requires a bit of coordination. The tapeworm treatment (praziquantel) needs to be administered between 24 and 120 hours before your dog arrives in Cyprus. That is a five-day window, closing 24 hours before arrival. The tick treatment needs to fall in the 24 to 48 hours before arrival, using a product specifically effective against Rhipicephalus sanguineus. In practice, most vets administer both treatments at the same appointment, 24 to 48 hours before travel, which satisfies both windows simultaneously.
The AHC is issued at the same appointment or just after, within 10 days of travel. Because both treatments need to be timed from Cyprus arrival, not UK departure, make sure the vet is calculating from the correct end.
Flying with a pet to Cyprus: what the airlines allow
Cyprus is a popular holiday destination and several airlines connect the UK to Larnaca (LCA) and Paphos (PFO), but pet acceptance in the hold varies more than you might expect.
easyJet accepts pets in the aircraft hold on Cyprus routes from Gatwick and Luton. The pet is checked in as excess baggage rather than cargo. British Airways accepts pets on the Heathrow to Larnaca route, either as hold baggage or via BA World Cargo depending on the animal’s size. Both are the most reliable options for pet transport to Cyprus from the UK.
Charter airlines (TUI, Jet2) typically do not carry pets. If you are booking a package holiday with a charter flight, you will need to arrange separate transport for your pet on a scheduled airline. Confirm current acceptance policies with any airline before booking, as these can change between seasons.
