Checklist

What your pet needs

Every item below must be completed and verified before your pet can travel. Expand each category for the detail.

Microchip
ISO 11784/11785 microchip, with the chip number, breed, sex and age recorded on certificate 3890EHC. Source: APHA 3890NFG, 2023.
Rabies vaccination
Current rabies vaccination required. Barbados generally asks for a 35-day wait after a primary vaccination, or after re-vaccinating a lapsed or missed booster, before a pet is eligible to enter; an unbroken, in-date booster doesn't restart that clock. Source: Barbados Ministry of Agriculture import guidance, as summarised by PetTravel.com and BringFido, 2026.
Rabies titre test
Not required for a pet with the UK residency declaration (3 months, or since birth) on certificate 3890, because the UK is one of roughly 70 countries and territories Barbados classes as Category 1, its low-rabies-risk tier. Without that residency history, a FAVN titre test at 0.5 IU/ml or above is required, drawn no sooner than 30 days after vaccination, with a 90-day wait before entry. Source: APHA 3890NFG, 2023; PetTravel.com Barbados country classification.
Quarantine
None for a compliant pet. Barbados dropped routine quarantine for animals meeting its import conditions on 1 January 2015. A non-compliant pet faces quarantine, return, or euthanasia at the importer's expense. Source: PetRelocation, 'Barbados Relaxes Its Pet Import Rules'; Barbados Ministry of Agriculture.
Import permit
Import Permit required in advance from Barbados's Veterinary Services Department. Fee BDS $25.00, valid 6 months from issue, application form available from the Veterinary Services office or agriculture.gov.bb. Source: APHA 3890NFG, 2023; Barbados Ministry of Agriculture, 'Bringing Animals into Barbados.'
Health certificate
Certificate 3890EHC itself serves as the health certificate Barbados requires; there is no separate Barbados-format form to complete. Source: APHA 3890NFG, 2023.
Export permit
No general UK export permit for a personal pet move. Certificate 3890EHC, below, is the document that matters. Source: GOV.UK, export health certificate finder, 2026.
Health certificate
Export Health Certificate 3890 ('Export of Dogs and Cats from the United Kingdom to Barbados'), signed by an APHA-authorised Official Veterinarian in a colour other than black, following a clinical examination no more than 7 days before export. The owner must also sign a written declaration of the pet's UK residency (at least 3 months, or since birth); that declaration is what allows the rabies blood test on the certificate to be waived. A pet without that residency history needs the FAVN titre test instead. Source: APHA, '3890NFG: Notes for Guidance,' revised 8 November 2023.

Carriers on this route

Not all airlines accept live animals on this route. Confirm the operating carrier's current policy for every flight segment.

British Airways
The only carrier that satisfies Barbados's own transport condition, flying non-stop from Heathrow year-round and from Gatwick daily since March 2026 to Grantley Adams (BGI), on Boeing 787s, roughly 8.5 hours. Pets travel via IAG Cargo's temperature-controlled hold.
Cargo Only
Virgin Atlantic
Flies Gatwick to Barbados on its own passenger schedule, but its cargo pet product has been unavailable since late 2025 with no confirmed return date. Not currently bookable for a live animal, despite operating the route itself.

Costs

What this route typically costs

APHA export health certificate (3890EHC) appointment: GBP 100-250
Barbados Import Permit: BDS $25.00 (about GBP 10)
IATA-compliant travel crate: GBP 60-250
British Airways World Cargo, Heathrow or Gatwick to BGI, non-stop: GBP 900-2,000
Barbados customs broker to handle arrival and the 3-working-day notice: USD 100-300
Overtime inspection fee if landing outside 8.15am-4.30pm or on a weekend: variable, avoidable by scheduling
Total typical range: GBP 1,200-2,800

Critical points

Barbados will not accept a pet on a connecting flight. It has to be the non-stop British Airways service from London, landing on a weekday. Booking any indirect routing, however convenient, breaches Barbados's own import condition and risks the pet being refused entry.

Virgin Atlantic flies the Gatwick-Barbados route itself but has suspended its pet cargo product. Don't assume a passenger-carrying airline on this route also carries pets; check the cargo product specifically, not just the flight schedule.

The 3-working-day advance notice to Barbados's Veterinary Services (owner's address, customs broker, flight number) is a separate step from the health certificate and the import permit. Missing it can delay clearance even when every other document is correct.

How Barbados handles incoming pets

Barbados has a clear set of import requirements that are manageable with some planning. Follow them in order and keep an eye on the dates that cannot move.

What experienced owners do

Use an official, government-authorised vet for the health certificate, not just your usual clinic. Many destinations only accept certificates signed by an approved vet.

If this is your first international move, consider an IPATA-registered pet transport agent. They handle the documents, airline booking and crate sizing, and can troubleshoot problems.

Get your pet used to the travel crate weeks in advance. A calm, crate-familiar animal travels far better than one meeting the crate for the first time at the airport.

Confirm live animal acceptance on every flight segment before booking. Not all aircraft or connections take pets, and cargo terms can differ leg to leg.

FAQ

Common questions

No. Barbados’s own import conditions require an air-arriving pet to come in on a non-stop flight from London, so any routing with a stop, however short, does not meet the rule. British Airways is currently the only carrier operating that non-stop service. Source: APHA, ‘3890NFG: Notes for Guidance,’ revised 8 November 2023.
Not if it has lived in the UK for at least 3 months, or since birth, which is declared on export certificate 3890. The UK is a Category 1 country in Barbados’s own classification, so that residency declaration replaces the blood test. Source: APHA 3890NFG, 2023.
BDS $25.00, valid for 6 months from the date of issue. It’s applied for through Barbados’s Veterinary Services Department ahead of travel. Source: APHA 3890NFG, 2023; Barbados Ministry of Agriculture, ‘Bringing Animals into Barbados.’
An overtime inspection fee applies for arrivals outside 8.15am to 4.30pm, and for weekend or bank holiday landings. The pet still needs to arrive Monday to Friday regardless. Source: APHA 3890NFG, 2023.
