Overview
This is one of the most document-intensive pet moves in the world. Australia’s biosecurity rules mean your dog or cat will spend 10 days in a quarantine facility on arrival, and the preparation process takes at minimum six months. The good news: it is entirely achievable with the right planning, and thousands of UK pets make this journey every year.

Critical points

Read before you book

⚠ The 180-day wait after a satisfactory titre test is non-negotiable. There is no way to shorten it. Start this process at minimum 7 months before your intended travel date.
⚠ Microchip must be implanted BEFORE the rabies vaccination. If the chip is implanted after, the vaccination is invalid for titre test purposes and the entire process restarts.
⚠ DAFF import permits must be in place before departure. Arriving without a valid permit means the animal is returned at the owner's expense or destroyed.
⚠ Quarantine space at Mickleham, Victoria is limited. Book immediately after confirming your titre test date, not when you are finalising travel.
⚠ Australia bans several breeds including Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, Pit Bull Terrier types. These cannot be imported.

Why Australia requires six months of preparation

Australia is one of the few countries in the world that has eradicated rabies and intends to keep it that way. Every animal entering the country goes through a mandatory post-entry quarantine period regardless of vaccination history. The quarantine is not a penalty for missing documentation; it is a standard condition of entry.

Beyond quarantine, Australia requires a rabies titre test with a satisfactory result (0.5 IU/ml or above), followed by a 180-day waiting period before travel. This waiting period cannot be shortened by any means. Combined with the time to administer the primary vaccination course and wait for the blood draw timing (at least 30 days post-vaccination), the earliest realistic preparation-to-travel timeline is around 7 months.

UK pets are classified as Group 3 by DAFF, meaning they come from an approved, rabies-free country. This is a better classification than the United States (Group 4) and results in a simpler permit process and the same 10-day quarantine stay.

What the quarantine stay involves

The quarantine facility is located at Mickleham, approximately 30km north of Melbourne. Animals stay a minimum of 10 days. The facility is DAFF-operated and meets IATA standards for animal welfare. Dogs are housed in individual kennels with outdoor runs; cats in individual units.

Owners cannot visit during the quarantine period, though DAFF provides welfare updates. On day 10 (or later, if any documentation issue arises), you collect your pet in person from Mickleham. The facility requires advance booking, and spaces fill up especially during peak relocation periods (summer and early January).

All quarantine costs are paid by the owner. Budget AUD 2,000 to AUD 4,000 for a standard 10-day stay, depending on the size and species of the animal.

Cats versus dogs: different complexity levels

Dogs and cats both require the import permit, microchip, titre test and quarantine. The documentation process is the same. However, cats have no CDC Dog Import Form equivalent, and the titre test process for cats applies the same standards as for dogs under the DAFF framework.

One practical difference: cats typically handle the quarantine environment better than large dogs. Some breeds of dogs, particularly working breeds and those prone to anxiety, find the quarantine facility stressful. Your vet can advise on preparation strategies for the journey and quarantine period.

FAQ

Common questions

No. The 10-day quarantine is the minimum stay regardless of documentation. Australia does not offer early release for pets with complete paperwork. Some owners hope that perfect documentation means a faster release; it does not. The 10 days is fixed by biosecurity law, not by administrative processing time.
The EU Pet Passport issued in the UK (before Brexit) and new GB-issued travel documentation are both accepted for the purpose of proving vaccination history for the DAFF import permit application. However, the primary document required for entry is the DAFF-approved health certificate, not the passport itself. The passport provides vaccination records that support your titre test evidence.
If the titre test result is below 0.5 IU/ml, you must wait at least 30 days and then have the vaccination course repeated before re-testing. The 180-day waiting period restarts from the new satisfactory test date. This is one reason many owners build extra lead time into their planning. A single failed titre test can add 6 to 8 months to the overall timeline.
All pets arriving in Australia must enter via the quarantine facility at Mickleham, Victoria, regardless of your final destination within Australia. There is no approved quarantine facility in Perth, Brisbane or Sydney for arriving pets. Your pet will travel to the Mickleham facility, complete the 10-day stay, and you can then arrange domestic travel to your destination city.
Yes. Australia bans the import of Pit Bull Terriers, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, and perros de presa Canario. These are absolute bans with no exemption available. A wider list of breeds may also be subject to state-level restrictions once in Australia. If your dog is a confirmed mix of any banned type, it cannot be imported. Check with DAFF and your state’s agriculture department before beginning the process.
You can manage the UK-to-Australia process yourself, but most owners use a specialist agent. The BICON import permit portal, DAFF-format health certificate, and coordination between APHA endorsement and airline cargo booking are manageable but detailed. A single missed step or incorrect document can mean the animal is held on arrival. Most agents who specialise in this route charge £500 to £1,500 and save considerably more in mistakes avoided.
