Pet Transport from the United Arab Emirates to Australia
This is one of the most demanding international pet transport routes available, and it starts with a question many owners overlook: whether the UAE is currently on Australia's approved country list for pet import. DAFF …
The import process, step by step
Every step must be completed in sequence. Starting early is critical: a missed deadline can add months.

Critical points
Verify UAE's DAFF-approved country classification at agriculture.gov.au BEFORE starting preparation. If the UAE is not on the approved list, a direct route to Australia is not possible and a stepping-stone country, most commonly the UK with a minimum 6-month stay, is required.
All pets entering Australia must arrive at Melbourne International Airport. No other Australian airport is approved for quarantine intake. Flights routing into Sydney, Brisbane or Perth cannot be used for pet import.
The 180-day post-titre wait begins on the date the blood was drawn, not the date the result was received. Starting the titre test late is the most common reason for missed travel dates on this route.
Import permit must be obtained from DAFF before travel. The airline will require it before accepting the pet cargo booking.
Temperature embargoes during Gulf summer months (typically June to September) can affect airline availability. Plan cargo bookings well in advance and confirm with the airline cargo department.

The DAFF classification question and what it means for your move
Australia’s pet import rules are managed by DAFF, which assigns each country a group classification from Group 1 (simplest requirements) to Group 6 (most demanding). Countries not on the list at all cannot send pets directly to Australia. The UAE’s classification has been a point of uncertainty, and DAFF does not publish advance notice of changes to the approved list.
For UAE-resident owners, the practical first step is to check agriculture.gov.au directly, or ask an IPATA-registered pet transport agent to confirm the current status. Do not start the preparation process, spend money on vaccinations, or book flights before you have confirmed whether a direct route exists. Getting this wrong after months of preparation is a costly and distressing outcome.
If the UAE is approved (for example, as a Group 3 country), the requirements include: ISO microchip before vaccination, completed rabies course, titre test at 0.5 IU/ml minimum from a DAFF-approved laboratory, 180-day post-titre wait, import permit from DAFF, and 10-day quarantine at Mickleham. The health certificate must be issued by a UAE government-approved vet and endorsed by Dubai Municipality (for Dubai) or MOCCAE equivalent for other emirates before travel.
The UK stepping-stone route explained
For owners who find the direct route unavailable, or who prefer a path with more established documentation, the UK stepping-stone is the most widely used alternative. The principle is straightforward: you relocate to the UK with your pet, the pet lives legally in the UK for at least 6 months, and you then apply to bring your pet to Australia under UK import rules. The UK-to-Australia pathway is well-established and tested.
This approach requires that your pet first meets UK entry requirements: ISO microchip, rabies vaccination, titre test, 3-month post-titre wait, and a UK Animal Health Certificate. Once in the UK and resident for the minimum period, you start the Australian side: DAFF import permit, APHA-endorsed health certificate in Australian-approved format, and cargo booking into Melbourne.
The total timeline for the stepping-stone route is typically 12-18 months from start to Australian arrival. For many UAE expats who are already planning a UK move before Australia, the timing aligns naturally. An IPATA-registered agent who handles both the UK and Australian legs is worth the investment on this route. Costs and paperwork increase with two moves, but the process is predictable.
Airlines and logistics from the UAE to Australia
All pet transport from the UAE to Australia is cargo only. No airline accepts pets in the cabin on this sector. Your pet travels as manifested cargo in a pressurised, temperature-controlled hold, which is the standard for long-haul international pet movements.
Emirates SkyCargo is the main option from Dubai, with direct services to Melbourne and connections to other Australian cities. Etihad Cargo operates from Abu Dhabi. Singapore Airlines and other carriers offer connecting routing via their hubs. Regardless of the route taken in the air, the destination must be Melbourne International Airport, as Mickleham is the only approved quarantine facility in Australia.
Book cargo space directly with the airline cargo division, not through the passenger ticket booking. Live animal cargo space is limited and managed separately from passenger reservations. Temperature embargoes during Gulf summer (typically June to September) can restrict availability. Confirm all arrangements with your cargo agent well ahead of your travel date and build contingency into the schedule in case of weather-related delays at departure.
