The Tunisia to Canada import process

At least 30 days before travel for a first vaccination, so the certificate is valid on arrival.

Every item below must be in place before your pet can enter. We verify and track each one.

Microchip

Not federally mandated by CFIA, though strongly advised and required in practice by most airlines and by the RNATT titre test process if that route is used instead of a vaccination certificate.

Rabies vaccination

Required for dogs and cats aged three months or older: a certificate in English or French from a licensed vet, clearly identifying the animal and confirming vaccination within the last three years. Dogs and cats under three months are exempt outright.

Rabies titre test

Not mandatory if a valid rabies vaccination certificate is presented. CFIA accepts a Rabies Neutralising Antibody Titre Test (RNATT), result at least 0.5 IU/ml and drawn at least 30 days after vaccination, as an alternative for a pet without a satisfactory vaccination certificate. Tunisia's place on CFIA's high-risk list for dog rabies does not force the titre test the way the CDC's equivalent list does for US entry.

Quarantine

None. CFIA does not apply post-import quarantine to a personal pet dog or cat from any country, high-risk classification included.

Import permit

Not required for a personal pet (one that will live with the owner and isn't being transferred, sold, bred or rehomed). Import permits and, since 28 June 2022, an outright entry ban apply only to commercial dogs from high-risk countries.

Health certificate

The DGSV-endorsed Tunisian export certificate, in English or French, presented at the first point of entry alongside proof of vaccination or the RNATT result.

Commercial dogs from Tunisia, meaning any dog being sold, adopted out, bred or rehomed on arrival, have been barred from entering Canada outright since 28 June 2022. This is separate from a personal pet accompanying its owner, which faces a lighter set of rules.

Tunisia's own outright ban on Pit Bull, Rottweiler, Tosa and Mastiff-type dogs is an import rule that applies to animals entering Tunisia. It does not restrict a dog leaving Tunisia for Canada, so this route is open to those breeds on Tunisia's side, subject to Air France and Tunisair's own carriage rules.

Air France and other carriers restrict brachycephalic breeds, pugs, bulldogs and similar, from the cargo hold on medical grounds, separate from any government import rule. Check this against the airline before booking.

There is no nonstop flight between Tunisia and Canada. Every booking transits a European hub, most realistically Paris or Frankfurt, on a two-carrier itinerary.

Use an official, government-authorised vet for the health certificate, not just your usual clinic. Many destinations only accept certificates signed by an approved vet.

Get your pet used to the travel crate weeks in advance. A calm, crate-familiar animal travels far better than one meeting the crate for the first time at the airport.
