What this route typically costs
Critical points
Tapeworm treatment for dogs has a strict 24 to 120 hour window before scheduled arrival time in Great Britain. Treatment outside this window makes the dog non-compliant. Cats and ferrets are exempt. Time the treatment carefully based on your flight arrival time at Heathrow.
SWISS allows small dogs and cats in the cabin on direct Zurich to London flights. At approximately 2 hours, this is one of the shortest routes where cabin travel is available for a European-to-UK pet move. Book cabin space at the same time as your own seat.
Penalty quarantine of up to 4 months at the owner's expense applies if documentation is incorrect or the arrival route is not approved. Heathrow is on the approved list for air arrivals from Switzerland.
The AHC issued by a Swiss vet is valid for 10 days from issue for GB entry. Each journey from Switzerland to the UK requires a new AHC.
Switzerland is not an EU member, so this is treated as a non-EU international entry into GB. Swiss-issued pet passports (if any exist) are not the same as EU pet passports for UK purposes.
The tapeworm timing requirement
Tapeworm treatment is required for dogs (not cats or ferrets) entering Great Britain from any country outside the UK. The timing rule is strict: the treatment must be administered no earlier than 120 hours (5 days) and no later than 24 hours before the dog’s scheduled arrival time in Great Britain.
For the Zurich to London Heathrow flight, which is typically 2 hours, this means the treatment window on a morning flight might require the treatment to be given the evening before, or in some cases the day before. Work out the treatment window from your scheduled arrival time in Heathrow, not your departure time from Zurich.
The vet who administers the treatment must record it in the Animal Health Certificate: the exact date and time, the product name (must contain praziquantel or an equivalent effective against Echinococcus multilocularis), and the dose. A missing or incomplete record is treated as a compliance failure. Give your Swiss vet enough time to complete the record correctly before the flight.
SWISS cabin travel to London
SWISS operates direct flights from Zurich to London Heathrow and London City. For small dogs and cats weighing up to 8 kg including the carrier, SWISS allows cabin travel on these routes. The carrier must fit under the seat in front. On a 2-hour flight, cabin travel is comfortable and avoids cargo handling entirely.
Book the cabin pet space at the time you book your own seat. The SWISS cabin pet fee is typically CHF 75 to CHF 120. For larger pets that exceed the 8 kg limit, Swiss WorldCargo handles pets in the pressurised hold. British Airways (which also flies this route frequently) uses IAG Cargo and does not allow cabin pets.
