Overview
Switzerland to Kazakhstan is a longer route that works best when you plan the vaccination timing and cargo routing early. Kazakhstan’s 30-day vaccination minimum (compared to EU’s 21 days) and the lack of a direct Zurich-Almaty cargo route mean both need attention before flights are booked. No titre test or quarantine applies. The FSVO-authorised Swiss vet issues the export health certificate. Budget four to eight weeks preparation, depending on where your pet’s vaccination records stand.

Critical points
Read before you book
⚠ The 30-day minimum for rabies vaccination is stricter than Swiss domestic standards. Do not book flights based on the EU or Swiss 21-day rule.
⚠ Bengal cats and Savannah cats may be restricted. Kazakhstan requires five or more generations removed from the wild ancestor in the pedigree. Bring full pedigree documentation if travelling with one of these breeds.
⚠ Kazakhstan has two main international airports: Almaty (ALA) and Nur-Sultan (NQZ). Confirm which city is your destination and book the correct arrival airport. Almaty handles more international cargo connections.
⚠ Switzerland does not issue EU pet passports. The FSVO export certificate is the correct travel document for Kazakhstan.

Planning around the 30-day vaccination window
Kazakhstan requires rabies vaccination at least 30 days before arrival, with a maximum of 12 months before travel. Switzerland’s own vaccination standards and EU regulations use a 21-day minimum, so the Kazakhstan rule is nine days stricter.
For the majority of Swiss pets with established vaccination records, this is not a practical obstacle. The vaccination is almost certainly more than 30 days old. The rule becomes relevant when planning a move in the month immediately following a vaccination update. Build the full 30-day gap into your schedule before purchasing flights.
If your pet’s rabies vaccination is due for renewal shortly, consider updating it well in advance of the move so that both the 30-day window and the 12-month validity window work cleanly around your travel date.
Routing options from Zurich to Kazakhstan
There is no direct cargo service for pets between Zurich and Kazakhstan. The two main routing options are via Frankfurt with Air Astana or Lufthansa Cargo, or via Istanbul with Turkish Airlines Cargo.
The Frankfurt route works well because Air Astana operates between Frankfurt and Almaty, and Lufthansa Cargo can handle the Zurich to Frankfurt leg. Almaty (ALA) is the main international airport in Kazakhstan and handles the majority of inbound live animal cargo.
The Istanbul route via Turkish Airlines Cargo is also effective. Turkish Airlines has an established network through Istanbul to Central Asian destinations including Almaty and Nur-Sultan. Both routing options require confirming live animal cargo acceptance on each individual leg.
The FSVO certificate for non-EU destinations
Switzerland is outside the EU. Swiss pets do not carry EU pet passports; instead, they require an export health certificate from an official veterinarian authorised by the FSVO (Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office, blv.admin.ch).
The FSVO certificate for Kazakhstan records the pet’s microchip number, rabies vaccination history, and a veterinary health declaration. Your FSVO-authorised vet issues it close to the departure date. If your practice does not hold FSVO export authorisation, ask the FSVO to direct you to an authorised vet in your canton.
FAQ
Common questions
Microchipping is not legally mandatory under Kazakhstan’s companion animal import rules. However, it is strongly recommended. Without a microchip, there is no reliable way to identify your pet if documentation is questioned or if the animal is separated from you. Most Swiss pets are already chipped. If yours is not, arrange microchipping before the rabies vaccination so the chip pre-dates the vaccination record.
Most international cargo connections and live animal freight services arrive at Almaty International Airport (ALA). If your final destination is in western Kazakhstan or Nur-Sultan (the capital), discuss the arrival airport with your pet transport agent. Almaty is typically easier for cargo coordination.
The inspection at Almaty or Nur-Sultan is a documentary check. Veterinary officials review the health certificate, vaccination records, and microchip number. Compliant pets with complete paperwork are generally cleared within a reasonable time at the airport. Bring the original health certificate and vaccination booklet, not copies.
It depends on the pedigree. Kazakhstan restricts Bengal cats that are not sufficiently removed from the Asian leopard cat ancestor. The rule is five or more generations of pedigree separation from the wild ancestor. If your Bengal is a registered F5 or later, bring full pedigree documentation showing the generation history. If earlier than F5, contact the Kazakhstan Committee for Veterinary Control and Supervision (egov.kz) before planning the move.
