What this route typically costs
Critical points
The VSD import permit is the single most important step. Jamaica will not allow entry without it, and the process takes 8-12 weeks. This is the first action to take, before any vet appointments or flight bookings.
Four dog breeds are restricted: Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, Japanese Tosa, and Pit Bull Terrier. If your dog is one of these breeds, contact the VSD directly before submitting any application.
The external parasite treatment must be administered within 48 hours of transport. An unexpected flight delay that pushes your actual departure beyond 48 hours from the treatment date creates a documentation problem. Build in a small buffer where possible.
14 days of quarantine at Plumb Point is mandatory regardless of vaccination status or certificate quality. Factor this into your personal travel and accommodation arrangements in Jamaica.
Approved carriers for this route
Not all airlines accept live animals. We book only with carriers that handle live animal cargo correctly.
How Jamaica handles incoming pets
What experienced owners do
Keep every original document together and take copies. Border officials want originals, and a missing signature or date can hold up clearance.
Work backwards from your travel date and add a buffer. Fixed waiting periods mean a single slipped appointment can push the whole move back by weeks.
Check the airline’s crate size and labelling rules early. An undersized or wrongly labelled crate is a frequent reason pets are refused at check-in.
Ask about temperature embargoes for your travel window. Summer and winter cargo restrictions can rule out certain routes and dates entirely.
