What this route typically costs
Critical points
The EU pet passport does not cover travel to Armenia. You need an EU export health certificate endorsed by a MAPA-approved official vet, which is a different document issued within 10 days of travel.
The SSFS import permit must be obtained before travel. Do not book flights before confirming the permit process and expected turnaround time with ssfs.am.
No direct flights connect Madrid or Barcelona to Yerevan. All routes go via Istanbul or another hub. Confirm pet cargo acceptance on every leg before booking.
Approved carriers for this route
Not all airlines accept live animals. We book only with carriers that handle live animal cargo correctly.
Why does the EU pet passport not work for Armenia?
The EU pet passport is a standardised document for movement between EU member states and a specific list of non-EU countries that the EU has formally approved. Armenia is not on that approved list. So while your dog or cat may already have an EU pet passport from previous travel within Europe, it has no legal function for entry into Armenia.
What Armenia’s SSFS accepts is an official health certificate from the exporting country, in this case Spain, endorsed by a MAPA-approved official veterinarian. This certificate records the microchip number, rabies vaccination details, and a declaration of fitness to travel. It must be issued within 10 days of your travel date.
Contact the SSFS at ssfs.am before booking anything. Ask them for the exact certificate template they require and whether any specific wording is needed beyond the standard EU export health certificate. Getting this confirmed in writing before your vet prepares the document prevents problems at the border.
How does the SSFS import permit process work?
The SSFS import permit is the step that takes the most time and should be started first. Armenia requires you to hold this permit before your pet arrives. The application goes to the State Service for Food Safety at ssfs.am.
The process involves submitting details about your pet: species, breed, microchip number, vaccination status, and travel plans. Turnaround times vary, so apply as soon as you know your intended travel dates. Do not book flights before you have confirmation that the permit process is underway with a realistic expected issue date.
Once the permit is confirmed, book cargo space with your chosen airline. Holds on flights connecting through Istanbul can fill up, particularly in summer. Contact Turkish Cargo directly, not just the general booking line, to confirm pet acceptance on both legs of the journey.
Which airlines fly pets from Spain to Yerevan?
There are no direct flights from Madrid (MAD) or Barcelona (BCN) to Yerevan Zvartnots (EVN). Turkish Airlines is the most reliable option, connecting through Istanbul on both MAD-IST-EVN and BCN-IST-EVN routings. Vueling operates BCN-IST and can connect to Turkish Airlines for the onward leg, but you need to confirm that both carriers will accept your pet in cargo on a single itinerary before booking.
Airline cargo fees for the Spain-to-Yerevan routing typically run from EUR 600 to EUR 1,800 depending on your pet’s weight and crate dimensions. The MAPA official vet and health certificate costs around EUR 80 to EUR 200. Total costs including crate and any agent fees generally fall between EUR 1,100 and EUR 3,000.
