What this route typically costs
Critical points
The 3-month wait from blood draw is fixed. Plan your departure date backwards from that point first.
South Africa to New Zealand requires at least two flight sectors. Singapore Airlines JNB-SIN-AKL is the most direct routing for cargo pets.
Levin quarantine accepts arrivals on weekdays only. Avoid flight routing that delivers your pet on a Friday or weekend.
If the titre test result is below 0.5 IU/ml, a booster and repeat draw are required, resetting the 3-month wait.
The RNATT titre test: timing the South Africa to New Zealand journey
New Zealand’s MPI requires a rabies neutralising antibody titre test (RNATT) for all pets arriving from countries outside Australia. For South African pets, the blood draw happens in South Africa at an MPI-approved laboratory. The result must be 0.5 IU/ml or above. Critically, your pet cannot enter New Zealand until at least 3 months have passed from the blood draw date.
The blood draw must happen at least 28 days after a valid rabies vaccination. So the minimum preparation sequence runs: vaccination, 28 days, blood draw, 3 months. Total: at least 4 months from vaccination to earliest possible New Zealand arrival. Most people allow 5 to 6 months to include time for the State Veterinarian endorsement, MPI permit processing (30 working days), and flight booking.
MPI-approved laboratories that handle South African samples include KSVDL (Kansas State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory) in the USA and the APHA National Reference Laboratory in the UK. Blood samples are drawn in South Africa and shipped by international courier to the lab. Your South African vet will have handled this before, or a specialist pet transport agent can coordinate it.
South Africa to New Zealand: the routing via Singapore
There are no direct flights from Johannesburg or Cape Town to Auckland or Christchurch. The standard routing for cargo pets goes via Singapore: Singapore Airlines operates JNB to SIN with regular cargo services, and from Changi there are frequent departures to Auckland and Christchurch. Singapore Airlines Cargo has good live animal handling infrastructure at Changi, and the JNB-SIN sector is a well-used route for South African pet owners heading to New Zealand.
An alternative is routing via Dubai on Emirates, with a cargo connection from DXB to Auckland. Emirates SkyCargo handles live animals, and Dubai is a transit hub with significant cargo capacity. However, the DXB to AKL connection typically requires a carrier change, adding complexity. Confirm live animal acceptance on each sector individually before committing to this routing.
A third option is via Sydney: South Africa to Sydney (via Singapore or Dubai), then Air New Zealand SYD-AKL. This adds a third sector but can be useful when direct Changi to Auckland cargo space is tight around peak travel periods. Discuss current availability with your cargo agent when booking.
Levin quarantine and the MPI import permit
The MPI import permit is your first action item, not your last. Apply through mpi.govt.nz at least 30 working days before your intended travel date. The permit specifies all the conditions your pet must meet and authorises the Levin quarantine booking. Do not finalise flights without the permit confirmed.
The Levin Quarantine Facility in Levin, Manawatu, is where all cats and dogs arriving in New Zealand (except those from Australia) spend their mandatory 10 days. The facility is professionally run with veterinary oversight, and owners can arrange visits during the quarantine period. Levin is roughly 90 minutes’ drive from Wellington and 2 hours south of Auckland.
The facility receives pets on weekdays only. Time your flight so your pet arrives at Auckland or Christchurch on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. A Friday arrival leaves your pet waiting over the weekend before transfer can be arranged.
