Moving your pet from Slovenia to United Kingdom?
Slovenia is a UK Part 1 listed country, so this route is one of the simpler international pet transport scenarios. No titre test, no waiting period, no quarantine for correctly documented pets.
You need: ISO microchip, current rabies vaccination, EU Animal Health Certificate from an official Slovenian vet (or a valid EU pet passport issued before January 2021), and tapeworm treatment for dogs. The AHC is valid for 10 days.
Ljubljana Airport (LJU) does not have direct connections to the UK. The most practical routing goes via Vienna with Austrian Airlines, or via Frankfurt or Munich with Lufthansa. Both allow cabin pets on the European leg to London.

The Slovenia–United Kingdom route requires quarantine on arrival, so planning well ahead matters. In plain terms, this is a low route, meaning the requirements are relatively straightforward compared to many international moves.
Most owners start the process around 2-4 weeks before the flight date. That window is not arbitrary — it accounts for vaccination waiting periods, titre test processing, and document endorsement.
How long does the whole process take?
Here is how the preparation unfolds from start to travel day:
What should I expect to pay?
Costs vary considerably depending on your pet's size, the airline, and whether you use a pet relocation agent. The main factors to price up are:
- EU Animal Health Certificate from official Slovenian vet (approximately EUR 60-120)
- Airline cabin fee or cargo fee Ljubljana to London
- Tapeworm treatment fee (dogs)
- IATA-compliant crate if travelling as cargo

Export health certificate: EU Animal Health Certificate (AHC) from an official Slovenian vet within 10 days of travel, or valid EU pet passport issued before 1 January 2021.
Which airlines can my pet travel on?
Several airlines serve routes between Slovenia and United Kingdom, each with different policies on pets in cabin versus cargo hold:
Via Vienna (VIE). Ljubljana (LJU) to Vienna then Vienna to London Heathrow. Austrian Airlines is the most natural connection from Ljubljana, given Vienna's geographic proximity. Cabin pets on Vienna-London. Austrian Cargo for larger pets.
Via Frankfurt (FRA) or Munich (MUC). Ljubljana to Frankfurt/Munich then to London. Cabin pets possible on European legs. Lufthansa Cargo handles larger pets.
easyJet does not accept pets (except registered assistance animals) on any route. Not a viable option for most pet travel.
Ryanair does not accept pets on most routes. Not a viable option for pet transport from Slovenia.
Via Paris CDG. Ljubljana to Paris then Paris to London. Air France allows small cabin pets. Air France Cargo for larger pets. Slightly longer routing but a reliable alternative.
Via Amsterdam (AMS). Ljubljana to Amsterdam then Amsterdam to London. KLM allows small cabin pets on some legs. KLM Cargo for larger animals.
What are the most common mistakes on this route?
Routing from Ljubljana: why Vienna is usually the best option
Ljubljana International Airport (LJU) is a small airport with limited international connections. There are currently no direct scheduled flights to UK airports from Ljubljana.
Vienna (VIE) is the most practical hub, around 6 hours by road or 45 minutes by air from Ljubljana. Austrian Airlines connects Vienna to London Heathrow multiple times daily, and the connection is seamless for pet cargo. Small pets may travel in the cabin on the Vienna-London leg.
Alternatively, Lufthansa connects through Frankfurt (FRA) or Munich (MUC), both easily reachable from Slovenia by road (Ljubljana to Munich is about 3.5 hours). The Frankfurt-London and Munich-London services have excellent frequency and Lufthansa Cargo is reliable for larger pets.
Some owners drive to a hub airport rather than flying domestically first, which is worth considering if your pet would find a road journey more comfortable than a connecting flight.
EU pet passport rules after Brexit: what Slovenian owners need to know
EU pet passports issued before 1 January 2021 are valid for UK entry. Those issued on or after that date are not. This is a common source of confusion for EU owners travelling to the UK.
If your pet’s passport was issued in 2021 or later, you need an EU Animal Health Certificate from an official Slovenian vet. The AHC covers a single trip and is valid for 10 days from the examination date. It needs to be issued by an officially authorised vet, so check whether your regular vet holds this designation.
The AHC replaces the old EU pet passport for UK travel and serves the same practical purpose, just with a shorter validity window.
