Carriers on this route

Not all airlines accept live animals on this route. Confirm the operating carrier's current policy for every flight segment.

KLM Cargo
The KLM/Kenya Airways joint venture runs a structured cargo path from Kigali (KGL) via Nairobi (NBO), connecting onward through Amsterdam (AMS) to Oslo Gardermoen (OSL). This is the most established East Africa to Scandinavia cargo lane for live animals.
Cargo
Brussels Airlines
Direct KGL-BRU service, with onward connection from Brussels to Oslo. A reliable option given Brussels' frequent Scandinavian traffic.
Cargo
Ethiopian Airlines Cargo
Well-established KGL-ADD cargo lane via Addis Ababa, with onward routing to Oslo through Ethiopian's European partner network.
Cargo
RwandAir
RwandAir flies KGL-BRU, with an onward connection to Oslo. Useful as a second option if Brussels Airlines cargo space on the same leg is full.

Costs

What this route typically costs

FAVN titre test at an EU-approved laboratory: USD 150-250 plus sample shipping
RAB veterinary endorsement and EU-format export health certificate: USD 100-200
Tapeworm treatment (Praziquantel, dogs only): USD 20-40
Cargo fee KGL to Oslo (OSL): USD 800-2,200 depending on crate size and routing
IATA-approved travel crate: USD 80-250
Boarding costs if the 90-day wait outlasts a planned move date

Critical points

The 90-day wait is measured from the date blood was drawn for the titre test, not the date the result arrives. Confusing the two adds months to the plan.

Microchip must go in before the rabies vaccination. Reverse the order and the vaccination does not count for the titre test sequence, meaning a restart.

Norway requires every dog arriving from outside Norway to have a tapeworm treatment, regardless of where the dog is travelling from. Cats are exempt.

If the titre result falls below 0.5 IU/ml, re-vaccination and a fresh blood draw are needed, and the 90-day wait restarts from the new draw date.

How Norway handles incoming pets

Norway has a detailed set of import rules, and each one needs to be satisfied before travel. None of it is unusual, but the order and timing are what catch people out.

What experienced owners do

Keep every original document together and take copies. Border officials want originals, and a missing signature or date can hold up clearance.

Work backwards from your travel date and add a buffer. Fixed waiting periods mean a single slipped appointment can push the whole move back by weeks.

Check the airline’s crate size and labelling rules early. An undersized or wrongly labelled crate is a frequent reason pets are refused at check-in.

Ask about temperature embargoes for your travel window. Summer and winter cargo restrictions can rule out certain routes and dates entirely.

FAQ

Common questions

No. Norway’s tapeworm treatment rule applies only to dogs. A cat travelling from Rwanda still needs the full unlisted-country sequence, microchip, vaccination, titre test and 90-day wait, but not the tapeworm step.
From the date blood is drawn for the FAVN titre test, not from the date the lab result comes back. Plan the blood draw date as your key milestone, then count 90 days forward before booking travel.
KLM Cargo via Nairobi and Amsterdam, Brussels Airlines via Brussels, Ethiopian Airlines Cargo via Addis Ababa, and RwandAir via Brussels all offer routings into Oslo. Confirm live animal acceptance on the connecting leg before booking.
The dog needs re-vaccination and a fresh blood draw at least 30 days later, and the 90-day wait restarts from that new draw date, not the original one.
