Airlines
Carriers on this route
Not all airlines accept live animals on this route. Confirm the operating carrier's current policy for every flight segment.
Brussels Airlines
Flies KGL to Brussels (BRU) with a same-alliance connection on to Prague (PRG). Brussels handles live animal cargo routinely, which makes this the steadiest option for dogs travelling in the hold on this route.
Cargo and Cabin
KLM Cargo
Routes via Nairobi (NBO) then Amsterdam, with onward cargo connections to Prague. Part of the established KLM/Kenya Airways joint venture out of East Africa, a structured path with predictable transit handling.
Cargo
Ethiopian Airlines Cargo
Connects Kigali to Addis Ababa (ADD), then on to Central Europe. Ethiopian has a well-established cargo operation between East Africa and Europe, useful if Brussels capacity is full.
Cargo
RwandAir
Operates KGL to Brussels (BRU) directly, with onward connections available to Prague. Worth comparing against Brussels Airlines on the same BRU leg for schedule and price.

Costs
What this route typically costs
FAVN or ELISA titre test at an EU-approved laboratory: approx EUR 100-200
Cargo fee, Kigali to Prague via Brussels or Addis Ababa: approx EUR 700-1,800 depending on crate size and routing
RAB export health certificate and endorsement fees
IATA-approved travel crate: EUR 60-250
Pre-travel veterinary examination fee
Agent coordination fee if using a door-to-door pet transport service
Critical points
The 90-day wait runs from the blood draw date, not the date the titre result arrives. Confusing the two adds months to the plan.
The microchip has to go in before the rabies vaccination. Reverse the order and the vaccination does not count for the titre sequence, so the whole clock restarts.
The EU-format health certificate is only valid for 10 days. On a multi-leg route through Brussels or Addis Ababa, build in enough slack that the certificate is still valid when the pet lands at Prague.
SVA officials check documentation on arrival. Missing or incomplete paperwork can mean the pet is held rather than cleared straight through.
The rules for bringing a pet into Czech Republic
Czech Republic has a detailed set of import rules, and each one needs to be satisfied before travel. None of it is unusual, but the order and timing are what catch people out.
How to keep this move on track
Book the titre test laboratory well ahead. Approved labs have limited slots and the sample takes time to process, so this is not something to leave to the final weeks.
Microchip before you vaccinate. The microchip must be in place before the rabies shot for the vaccination to count, and getting this order wrong is the most common and costly mistake.
Use an official, government-authorised vet for the health certificate, not just your usual clinic. Many destinations only accept certificates signed by an approved vet.
If this is your first international move, consider an IPATA-registered pet transport agent. They handle the documents, airline booking and crate sizing, and can troubleshoot problems.
FAQ
Common questions
Rwanda is not on the EU’s approved list of countries for simplified pet travel. Under EU Regulation (EU) 2020/692, pets from unlisted countries need a titre test showing at least 0.5 IU/ml at an EU-approved laboratory, plus a 90-day wait from the blood draw date, before entry to any EU state including the Czech Republic.
From the blood draw date. This is the single detail that catches people out most on this route. Even if the lab result takes several weeks to arrive, the 90-day clock has already been running since the day the sample was taken.
The vaccination will not count for the titre test sequence. EU rules require the chip before or on the same day as the vaccination. If the order is reversed, the pet needs a fresh vaccination after the chip is confirmed, and the 30-day and 90-day waits both restart from that new vaccination date.
Brussels Airlines or RwandAir, both via Brussels, are the most direct paths and Brussels is well set up for live animal cargo. KLM via Nairobi and Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa are reasonable alternates if those flights are booked up or don’t suit your schedule.
