Pet Transport from Portugal to the Netherlands

At a glance

  • Typical timeline: 3-5 weeks from start to arrival
  • Complexity: Low — plan well ahead
  • Quarantine: None for EU to EU travel with valid documents.

Portugal to the Netherlands is an intra-EU journey, and the pet travel rules reflect that simplicity. Your EU Pet Passport, a working ISO microchip, and a current rabies vaccination are all that separate your pet from a smooth border crossing at Amsterdam Schiphol.

The route has excellent direct flight connectivity. Both TAP Air Portugal and KLM fly direct between Lisbon and Amsterdam, and both accept cabin pets. Transavia adds a budget option on the same corridor.

The practical challenge is the same as every European pet journey: check that vaccinations are current well before you start looking at flights. If anything needs updating, factor in three weeks before you can travel.

The Journey, Step by Step

Before booking. Allow 21 days for revaccination if needed.

Things to Know Before You Book

Dutch entry requirements for a pet from Portugal

The Netherlands applies EU Regulation 2019/2035 at its borders. The NVWA (Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority) oversees pet entry checks at Schiphol.

For a dog or cat arriving from Portugal with a valid EU Pet Passport, the process is routine. Microchip scan, documentation check, and you are through. The 21-day vaccination rule applies: the rabies vaccination must have been given at least 21 days before the date of travel.

One detail that sometimes surprises people: the Netherlands is meticulous about passport completeness. Make sure every vaccination entry is properly dated and the vet’s details are filled in. Gaps or unclear entries can slow things down at the NVWA desk.

Flying from Lisbon to Amsterdam with your pet

TAP Air Portugal runs direct daily services between Lisbon and Amsterdam. Cabin pets travel in the passenger cabin (under the seat in front of you) in a soft-sided carrier. Weight limit is 8kg including the carrier.

KLM and its budget partner Transavia cover the same route. KLM has a long history of handling cargo pets through Amsterdam Schiphol, and its Cargo team is experienced with intra-EU movements.

The budget carriers – Ryanair and easyJet – both fly this route regularly and at competitive prices. Neither accepts pets in cabin or hold. This is not a minor detail when planning with an animal.

Life in the Netherlands with a Portuguese pet

The Netherlands is excellent for dogs. Amsterdam and other Dutch cities have a culture of dogs in cafes, on public transport, and in daily life. Dogs are welcome on trains with a small supplementary fare.

The one practical note for Portuguese owners: Dutch weather is very different from Lisbon or Porto. The damp and cold will be more of a transition for your pet than any paperwork. Short-coated breeds and older pets adjust more slowly.

Parks are plentiful and well-maintained across Dutch cities. The flat cycling infrastructure actually works in your favour for daily dog walks.
