Requirements

Indonesia entry requirements

Every item below must be in place before your pet can enter. We verify and track each one.

Microchip
Required. ISO 11784/11785 standard, implanted before the rabies vaccination.
Rabies vaccination
Required, current, administered at least 30 days before arrival and no more than 12 months old on arrival.
Rabies titre test
Required. FAVN rabies antibody titre test, blood drawn 30 or more days post-vaccination, minimum result 0.5 IU/ml, from a laboratory Barantin recognises.
Quarantine
Mandatory on arrival, 7 to 14 days for a complete and compliant document set, at a Barantin quarantine facility. Missing paperwork extends this well beyond that window.
Import permit
Required. The rekomendasi (Surat Izin Pemasukan): a provincial recommendation followed by national approval from the Directorate of Animal Health in Jakarta. Valid 30 days from issue. Apply via karantinaindonesia.go.id.
Health certificate
Government-endorsed veterinary health certificate valid 5 to 10 days from issue. Species-specific vaccination required: DHLPP for dogs, FVRCP for cats.
Leaving Portugal

Export requirements

Export permit
Not required for personal pet dogs and cats leaving Portugal.
Health certificate
Official health certificate issued by a DGAV-authorised official veterinarian, in the format Barantin's rekomendasi permit specifies rather than the standard EU pet passport format used within the EU.
Costs

What this route typically costs

FAVN titre test: EUR 90-220
DGAV health certificate and vaccinations: EUR 100-320
IATA-compliant travel crate: EUR 100-450
Cargo LIS to CGK via Doha, Istanbul or Amsterdam: EUR 1,000-2,800 depending on size and routing
Barantin quarantine facility fees at CGK: confirm current rates directly with Barantin
Professional relocation agent: EUR 500-1,500
Total typical range: EUR 2,500-5,800 over a 5 to 7 month window

Critical points

There is no direct flight from Lisbon to Jakarta. Every option adds a hub connection, so build a full day or more of transit into the schedule.

The rekomendasi permit expires 30 days after issue. Confirm travel dates only once the permit is granted.

The DGAV certificate for Indonesia needs the Barantin-specified format, which differs from the standard EU pet passport used for intra-EU moves. A vet unfamiliar with this can delay the whole process.

Dogs must be at least 6 months old at entry, and Bali has no direct pet entry point: expect a mainland quarantine stop first.

Indonesia entry requirements at a glance

The requirements for Indonesia are thorough rather than difficult. Work through them methodically and confirm anything you are unsure about with the official source.

Getting the details right

Ask about temperature embargoes for your travel window. Summer and winter cargo restrictions can rule out certain routes and dates entirely.

Book the titre test laboratory well ahead. Approved labs have limited slots and the sample takes time to process, so this is not something to leave to the final weeks.

Microchip before you vaccinate. The microchip must be in place before the rabies shot for the vaccination to count, and getting this order wrong is the most common and costly mistake.

Use an official, government-authorised vet for the health certificate, not just your usual clinic. Many destinations only accept certificates signed by an approved vet.

FAQ

Common questions about this route

No. Indonesia is outside the EU pet passport system. You need a fresh health certificate from a DGAV-authorised vet, issued in the format Barantin’s rekomendasi permit specifies, alongside the FAVN titre test and the import permit itself.
No. Qatar Airways via Doha, Turkish Airlines via Istanbul, and TAP Air Portugal connecting into KLM’s Amsterdam hub are the three main routings. All involve at least one connection and a full day or more of total transit.
Plan for 4 to 8 weeks across both stages: the provincial recommendation and the national approval from the Directorate of Animal Health in Jakarta. Start the application once your FAVN titre result of 0.5 IU/ml or above is confirmed.
Yes. Indonesia requires dogs to be at least 6 months old at the point of entry, regardless of the origin country’s own age rules. Confirm this before booking, since a younger dog cannot be imported even with complete paperwork.
Your pet still enters through a mainland port, typically Jakarta, and completes Barantin quarantine there before an onward domestic transfer to Bali. Name the Bali province as your destination address in the rekomendasi application; the entry point itself will still be the mainland port.
The blood draw is done by your DGAV-authorised vet in Portugal, but the sample must be analysed at a laboratory Barantin recognises. Confirm with your agent or DGAV which currently approved laboratories accept samples from Portugal before scheduling the blood draw.
