Pet Transport from Portugal to France
Portugal to France is an EU-to-EU move. The EU Pet Passport is everything you need. The practical questions are all about travel logistics, flying is the fastest, driving gives the most flexibility for large or multiple pets.

What this route typically costs
Critical points
Book cabin pet space early, airlines limit the number of pets per flight. TAP and Air France both have cabin pet policies but spaces fill quickly.
Confirm the rabies vaccination in the EU passport is current before booking anything.
France's Categorie 1 and 2 breed restrictions apply. Portugal has its own DL 315/2009 dangerous dog legislation, check French rules specifically for your breed.
Approved carriers for this route
Not all airlines accept live animals. We book only with carriers that handle live animal cargo correctly.
The questions people ask us most about Portugal to France
The documentation questions are easy ones, EU passport, current vaccination, that’s it. The questions that take more thought are about the journey itself.
How early should I book cabin pet space? 4-6 weeks ahead if possible. TAP and Air France both limit the number of pets per flight: usually 2-3 animals: and those spots go. Don’t book the human ticket and assume the pet will follow.
Is the drive realistic? Lisbon to Paris is 18-20 hours including stops. Most people split it over two days, stopping in Salamanca or Burgos. The Pyrenees crossing at Irun is the most convenient border point. Your pet rides in the car throughout: no border stops, no cargo holds, just road time.
What if my pet is too big for cabin? Pets over 8kg (including carrier) go in the hold on TAP and Air France. This still works well for the Lisbon-Paris route, which is a direct 2h20m flight. Your dog or cat is in a temperature-controlled hold, not separated from you by 10,000 miles.
What France's DGAL looks for
Random pet document checks do occur at EU internal borders and at some rail and ferry terminals. DGAL inspectors check: EU Pet Passport, microchip matching, current rabies vaccination. That’s the full list for an EU-origin pet.
Portugal doesn’t have a rabies problem. France doesn’t either. But the vaccination requirement exists because EU Regulation 576/2013 applies uniformly across all member states, regardless of each country’s actual rabies status. It’s a legal requirement, not a practical risk assessment.
