Critical points to read before you book
Apply for the MAAIF import permit 8-10 weeks before travel at maaif.go.ug. It is the prerequisite for Uganda entry.
The Polish EU pet passport is for intra-EU travel only. The GIW export health certificate is required for Uganda.
Warsaw has no direct service to Entebbe. A hub connection via Brussels or Frankfurt/Addis Ababa is required.
MAAIF officers at Entebbe inspect both the permit and the health certificate. Both must be present and correctly formatted.

Routing from Warsaw to Entebbe
Warsaw Chopin Airport (WAW) has no direct service to Entebbe. Two main routings are practical for Poland-to-Uganda pet cargo.
Via Brussels: LOT Polish Airlines or another carrier connects WAW to Brussels Zaventem (BRU), where Brussels Airlines operates its established BRU-EBB East Africa service. This is a two-leg journey with a single European hub transfer. Confirm live animal cargo acceptance with Brussels Airlines Cargo for the BRU-EBB leg.
Via Frankfurt and Addis Ababa: LOT or Lufthansa connects WAW to Frankfurt (FRA), then Ethiopian Cargo to ADD, then ADD-EBB. Ethiopian Cargo has the most extensive live animal programme in Africa. Frankfurt is the primary European hub for Polish-to-Africa cargo. Kenya Airways via Nairobi (NBO-EBB) is an additional option via Gulf or European connections.
GIW export health certificate for Uganda
The Polish EU pet passport is valid for intra-EU travel only. For Uganda, the required document is an official health certificate issued by an authorised official veterinarian and endorsed by the Główny Inspektorat Weterynarii (GIW - Chief Veterinary Inspectorate) at wetgiw.gov.pl.
Contact GIW or your regional inspectorate to identify an authorised official vet. The certificate must be issued within 10 days of travel. Book the appointment and allow time for GIW endorsement within that window.
Confirm the certificate format meets Uganda’s specific requirements. A transport agent experienced in Polish exports to Africa can verify the correct format for MAAIF inspection at Entebbe.
MAAIF: Uganda's import permit requirement
Uganda’s Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) at maaif.go.ug manages companion animal imports. The MAAIF permit is the prerequisite document for Uganda entry. Apply at least 8-10 weeks before travel with your pet’s microchip number, species, breed, vaccination history, and travel date.
Follow up after submitting to confirm progress. On arrival at Entebbe, MAAIF inspects the permit alongside the GIW health certificate. No quarantine applies for compliant arrivals.
