Your pet needs a valid microchip (ISO standard), current rabies vaccination, and an official health certificate endorsed by MPI. Specific destination countries may require additional documents such as a titre test result, import permit, or specific certificate formats.
No export permit required. An official health certificate from MPI is required for export. For Australia, a specific Biosecurity Australia-approved AHC format is required.
The best airline depends on your destination. Air New Zealand operates cargo-only pet services from New Zealand. Always confirm live animal acceptance with the airline before booking.
Your destination country may restrict certain breeds regardless of your origin. Commonly restricted breeds include American Pit Bull Terrier, Dogo Argentino, Brazilian Fila, Japanese Tosa. Always check destination country rules for your specific breed.
Start at least 3 months before travel for most destinations. For Australia, New Zealand, or Mauritius, start 7-8 months ahead because of mandatory titre test waiting periods (180 days) and limited quarantine facility availability.
