Microchip
ISO 11784/11785 microchip required, identity-verified by the competent authority before the RNATT blood draw.
Rabies vaccination
Administered or confirmed once the pet is South Africa-resident. Australia only recognises a rabies course given in, or revalidated within, an approved country.
Rabies titre test
Required. Rabies Neutralising Antibody Titre Test (RNATT) at a DAFF-approved laboratory, minimum 0.5 IU/ml, in practice usually run through the Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute near Pretoria. Blood drawn at least 30 days after vaccination, then a 180-day wait from the date the lab receives the sample, running alongside rather than after the residency period if timed early.
Quarantine
Minimum 10 days at Mickleham Post Entry Quarantine Facility, Melbourne, if the microchip identity check happened before the RNATT blood draw and at least 180 days before departure. Otherwise the default rises to a 30-day minimum. Melbourne is the only Australian airport DAFF processes imported pets through, not Perth or Sydney, whatever the final destination city is.

Singapore Airlines does not carry pets into or out of Australia or South Africa on any route. An itinerary that looks convenient on a map, Johannesburg to Melbourne via Singapore, simply isn't available for a live animal on this carrier.
Melbourne is the only Australian port DAFF will process an imported pet through. A flight to Perth, even on a genuine direct Johannesburg-Perth service, doesn't satisfy DAFF's entry requirement; the pet still has to reach Melbourne specifically.
