Critical points
The tapeworm timing window is the most common mistake on EU-to-GB pet moves. Treatment must be given between 24 and 120 hours before the scheduled GB arrival time, not the departure time from Malta. Confirm the exact timing with your vet and record it in the AHC.
Malta is rabies-free. Your pet's existing rabies vaccination record must be current. If it has lapsed, you need a new vaccination and the 21-day wait before the AHC can be issued for GB travel.
Approved carriers on this route
| Airline | Notes | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Air Malta / KM Malta Airlines | Air Malta (now rebranded KM Malta Airlines) operates Malta International (MLA) to London Heathrow (LHR). Small pets may travel in-cabin depending on current policy. Larger pets as cargo. Confirm current pet policies directly with KM Malta Airlines before booking. | Cabin and Cargo |
| Ryanair | Ryanair flies MLA to London Stansted (STN) and other UK airports but does not accept pets in cabin or hold. Not suitable for pet transport. | No Pets |
| British Airways / Lufthansa Cargo via hub | BA World Cargo handles pets from MLA to LHR, often via a European hub connection. Lufthansa Cargo via Frankfurt is another reliable hub-and-spoke option. Confirm routing and pet cargo availability with an approved cargo agent. | Cargo Only |
Direct flights vs hub routing: what works for pets?
MLA to LHR on KM Malta Airlines (the former Air Malta) is the cleanest option for most pets. A direct flight means less handling, shorter journey time, and simpler logistics for the temperature-controlled hold. For cargo pets, the direct route is generally preferable to hub connections.
If the direct option is unavailable or fully booked, hub routing via Amsterdam (KLM), Frankfurt (Lufthansa), or Paris (Air France) adds a connection but gives access to larger cargo operations with established live animal facilities. Cargo pets are well managed at Schiphol, Frankfurt, and CDG.
Ryanair is the other major MLA-UK carrier, but it does not accept pets in any capacity. Budget carriers on this route are generally not options for pet transport.
Tick treatment: what Malta requires vs what GB requires
Dogs entering Malta must receive tick treatment against Rhipicephalus ticks 24-48 hours before arrival on the island. This is a Maltese import requirement, recorded in the AHC or EU pet passport.
Dogs entering Great Britain do not require tick treatment from Malta. The only treatment requirement for dogs coming from Malta to GB is the standard Praziquantel tapeworm treatment, given 24-120 hours before GB arrival. There is no separate tick requirement for the GB direction.
If you have used Malta’s pet travel documentation before, note this distinction carefully. The tick box in your pet passport records the Malta-inbound treatment, not a GB-inbound requirement.
