Which Switzerland rules depend on a pet coming from Malta?
Switzerland sorts countries into 3 groups, and Malta falls in “Category 1”.
EU Member States and other European states and territories using approved pet passports; free of urban rabies. Microchip, valid rabies vaccination and recognised pet passport. Official source
These rules apply to that group, on top of the rules every pet follows:
- Rabies titre test: Not required for Category 1 or 2 origins: the FSVO lists the titre test only under additional requirements for rabies risk countries. Animals from Category 1 or 2 transiting a Category 3 country by secure transport or airport (owner declaration) also need no titre (EDAV-Ht Art. 15 para. 4). Applies to dogs and cats from Category 1 and 2 countries.
Travelling with dogs, cats and ferrets, checked 1 October 2026 - Minimum age: From low rabies risk (Category 2) countries, young animals that have not completed vaccination can enter with a special owner declaration. From the EU, young animals up to 16 weeks that could not complete vaccination need the EU owner declaration. Applies to young dogs and cats from Category 1 and 2 countries.

The rules that apply to every pet entering Switzerland, whatever the origin, are listed with their official sources in our Switzerland guide.
