Checklist

What your pet needs

Every item below must be completed and verified before your pet can travel. Expand each category for the detail.

Microchip
Required regardless of origin country classification. ISO 11784/11785, before or on the same day as the first rabies vaccination.
Rabies vaccination
Required. Minimum age 12 weeks.
Rabies titre test
This is the open question on this route. Switzerland's FSVO only requires an FAVN or equivalent titre test, and the accompanying 3-month wait, for pets from countries it classifies as high rabies risk. The Maldives has no confirmed rabies cases and is treated as low risk or rabies-free by comparable UK and US classifications. We could not verify the Maldives' specific entry on the FSVO's own published country list at the time of writing, so we are not going to claim the titre test is or isn't required. Confirm directly with the FSVO (blv.admin.ch) before assuming either outcome.
Quarantine
No routine quarantine for a compliant arrival, under either scenario. Conditional quarantine applies if documentation is incomplete.
Import permit
FSVO advance permission is required only for pets from countries on the high rabies risk list. Whether the Maldives sits on that list is the same open question as the titre test above. Do not book non-refundable travel until the FSVO has confirmed this directly for your cat.
Health certificate
Health certificate in the format the FSVO requires, issued by the vet in Male, valid 10 days. Checked by the Swiss border vet on arrival regardless of which classification applies.
Export permit
None to apply for. No Maldivian government office issues a pet export permit for a companion animal travelling with its owner.
Health certificate
A private vet in Male issues a certificate confirming the cat is healthy, vaccinated and fit to fly. A government endorsement stamp isn't standard, though some airlines ask for one and the clinic can usually arrange it.

Carriers on this route

Not all airlines accept live animals on this route. Confirm the operating carrier's current policy for every flight segment.

Edelweiss Air
Flies Zurich (ZRH) to Male non-stop, twice weekly on a seasonal schedule (broadly March-May and September through the following March, based on current published timetables). This is the only Swiss-flagged direct service to the Maldives and worth checking against your travel window before assuming a Gulf connection is needed.
Cargo and Cabin
Qatar Airways
Zurich or Geneva to Male via Doha, the standard fallback outside Edelweiss's seasonal window.
Cargo Only
Emirates
Zurich to Male via Dubai, requiring an IATA-compliant crate and a recognised pet shipping agent.

Costs

What this route typically costs

FSVO advance permission application, if applicable: CHF 50-150
FAVN or equivalent titre test plus courier from Male, if applicable: EUR 180-320
FSVO-format health certificate: EUR 130-220
IATA crate, cargo booking and agent fee: EUR 900-1,700
Air waybill or cargo fee, Male to Zurich direct or via a Gulf hub: EUR 1,000-2,000
Total typical range varies sharply depending on whether the titre test and 3-month wait apply: EUR 2,200-4,200 if they do, considerably less and considerably faster if they don't

Critical points

We could not confirm from the FSVO's own primary country list whether the Maldives is classified as high rabies risk. Every other Maldives-origin destination in our coverage has a settled answer on this point; Switzerland genuinely does not, based on what we could verify. Contact the FSVO directly before assuming either the titre test route or the simpler vaccination-only route applies.

If the high-risk classification does apply, the FSVO advance permission has to be granted before travel, with no exception at the border, and the 3-month wait counts from the blood draw date, not the result date.

Edelweiss Air's direct Zurich-Male service runs on a seasonal timetable, not year-round. Check current dates before assuming it covers your travel window.

This is a cat route in practice. The Maldives bars dog imports, so few dogs live there, though a resident dog is not itself barred from leaving; that's a rarer case this guide doesn't cover in depth.

Switzerland entry requirements at a glance

Bringing a pet into Switzerland involves a fair amount of documentation. Keep everything organised and check each item against the current requirements before you book.

Getting the details right

Ask about temperature embargoes for your travel window. Summer and winter cargo restrictions can rule out certain routes and dates entirely.

Book the titre test laboratory well ahead. Approved labs have limited slots and the sample takes time to process, so this is not something to leave to the final weeks.

Microchip before you vaccinate. The microchip must be in place before the rabies shot for the vaccination to count, and getting this order wrong is the most common and costly mistake.

Use an official, government-authorised vet for the health certificate, not just your usual clinic. Many destinations only accept certificates signed by an approved vet.

FAQ

Common questions

We genuinely don’t know for certain. That requirement only applies to countries the FSVO classifies as high rabies risk, and while the Maldives is treated as rabies-free by comparable UK and US lists, we could not confirm its exact status on the FSVO’s own country list. Contact the FSVO directly before assuming either answer.
Yes. Edelweiss Air flies Zurich to Male non-stop, twice weekly, on a seasonal timetable. Check current dates against your travel plans, since it doesn’t run year-round.
Because the two possible outcomes of the FSVO classification question lead to very different processes. A high-risk classification means a titre test and a 3-month wait, similar to routes from Rwanda or Uganda. A lower-risk classification could mean a much shorter, vaccination-based process. We can’t collapse that range until the FSVO confirms which applies.
In practice, yes. The Maldives bars dog imports, so there’s a very small resident dog population to begin with. A dog already living there isn’t legally barred from leaving, but that’s an unusual case most owners on this route won’t encounter.
