Requirements

What your pet needs to enter Thailand

Every item below must be in place before your pet can travel. We manage and verify each one.

Microchip
ISO 11784/11785 microchip required. Must be implanted before the rabies vaccination.
Rabies vaccination
Required. Dogs must also be current on Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus and Leptospirosis. Cats need Feline Panleukopenia. All vaccines at least 21 days before arrival and within the past 12 months.
Rabies titre test
Not required. Thailand does not mandate a titre test for imports from Malaysia.
Quarantine
Not mandatory for compliant arrivals. A DLD quarantine officer can impose discretionary detention if documentation is incomplete or health concerns are noted. Standard arrivals clear on the same day.
Import permit
DLD import permit from the Department of Livestock Development Animal Quarantine Station. Apply 7-60 days before departure by email. Permit issued within 7 working days. Valid 60 days.
Health certificate
DVS health certificate with official government stamp and endorsement. Must be legible and include microchip number, vaccination dates and issuing vet details.
Export permit (Malaysia)
No formal export permit required for pet dogs and cats leaving Malaysia.
Costs

What this route typically costs

DVS health certificate Malaysia: RM 100-300
Vaccinations: RM 80-250 depending on what is needed
DLD import permit Thailand: nominal Thai government charge
Deworming treatment: RM 30-80
AirAsia or Malaysia Airlines cargo KUL to BKK: USD 400-1,200 depending on crate size
Total typical range: USD 800-2,000 for a medium dog

Critical points to read before you book

Apply for the DLD permit at least 7 days before departure. Email the DLD Animal Quarantine Station at your Thai entry port (Bangkok Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang). Allow 7 working days for issue.

Microchip must pre-date all vaccinations. If the chip was inserted after the rabies jab, Thai DLD may invalidate the vaccination record.

Health certificate must have a government stamp. A vet's personal signature without DVS official endorsement is not acceptable at Thai customs.

Malaysia is rabies-endemic. Thai DLD documentation must clearly show vaccination is current and within the 12-month validity period.

AirAsia cargo availability for live animals on international routes varies. Confirm live animal acceptance directly before booking.

Getting the DLD import permit from Malaysia

The import permit is issued by Thailand’s Department of Livestock Development (DLD) Animal Quarantine Station at the entry port. Most direct flights between Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok land at Suvarnabhumi (BKK) or Don Mueang (DMK). Email the relevant DLD AQS station with your pet’s details: microchip number, vaccination records and intended travel date. Expect a reply and permit within seven working days.

The permit is valid for 60 days from issue, so there is good flexibility if your travel date shifts. Apply between 7 and 60 days before departure. A permit is required; arriving without one means your pet will be held while the DLD processes an emergency application, which adds time, cost and stress.

If you prefer not to handle the DLD correspondence yourself, a Thai-based relocation agent can manage the application. They often have direct contacts at the relevant AQS stations and can clarify any questions about the documentation requirements.

Vaccinations: what Malaysia to Thailand actually requires

Thailand requires more than just a rabies vaccination. The full list for dogs includes rabies, canine distemper, canine hepatitis, canine parvovirus and leptospirosis. For cats, rabies and feline panleukopenia (feline distemper) are required. All must be given at least 21 days before arrival and must be within the past 12 months.

The microchip must be in place before the first vaccination. Thai DLD links the microchip number to the vaccination records. If there is any uncertainty about the order of microchipping and vaccination, the DLD may require the vaccination to be repeated.

The DVS export health certificate from your Malaysian vet must record all of these vaccinations clearly, with dates, vaccine product names and the vet’s details. The certificate must be officially stamped by the Malaysian DVS. Thailand treats this endorsement as the official export certification.

Comparing Malaysia to Thailand with Malaysia to Philippines and Malaysia to India

FactorMalaysia to ThailandMalaysia to PhilippinesMalaysia to India

Thailand is the easiest of the three destinations for Malaysia-origin pets. There is no quarantine for compliant arrivals and the DLD permit is more straightforward than the Philippines SPSIC or India’s AQCS NOC. If you have flexibility on destination, Thailand is the most operationally simple option in this group.

FAQ

Common questions about Malaysia to Thailand pet transport

No. Thailand does not require a FAVN titre test. The requirements are an ISO microchip (implanted before vaccination), current rabies and core vaccinations (at least 21 days before arrival), a DLD import permit, and an official DVS health certificate with government stamp.
Not automatically. Quarantine is discretionary in Thailand. For pets with complete documentation arriving from Malaysia, DLD officers typically clear the animal on arrival. A quarantine detention of up to 30 days can be imposed if there are document gaps or health concerns.
Email the DLD Animal Quarantine Station at your Thai entry airport (typically Bangkok Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang). Include your pet’s microchip number, vaccination records and travel date. The permit is issued within about 7 working days and is valid for 60 days. Apply 7-60 days before departure.
Possibly. AirAsia does operate cargo on some KUL to Bangkok routes. Confirm with AirAsia Cargo directly whether live animal cargo is available for your specific route and dates, and what size restrictions apply. Malaysia Airlines and Thai Airways are the established alternatives with consistent live animal cargo services.
