Overview
Five to six months is the realistic preparation window for this route. Malaysia is an unlisted third country under EU rules, so your pet needs a FAVN titre test with a result of 0.5 IU/ml or above, followed by a 90-day wait before travel. Add the DVS export health certificate from the Department of Veterinary Services, the EU Animal Health Certificate issued within 10 days of travel, and no quarantine awaits in Greece.

Critical points

Read before you book

⚠ Malaysia is unlisted for EU pet travel. The FAVN titre test and 90-day wait are mandatory with no exceptions.
⚠ Note that Malaysia's own import process (FAVN titre test plus 3-month wait from titre test result, plus 14-day quarantine) is separate from the EU process. You are dealing with Malaysia's export rules and the EU's entry rules.
⚠ The DVS export health certificate has a limited validity period. Coordinate its issuance with your travel date and the AHC timing.
⚠ Greece has no additional requirements beyond the standard EU protocol. No quarantine on arrival for compliant pets.

DVS export process from Malaysia

Malaysia’s Department of Veterinary Services manages pet exports through district offices and the Animal Passport portal. Your vet, registered with DVS, prepares the health certificate documenting the microchip number, rabies vaccination, and current health status.

DVS carries out a physical inspection of the animal before issuing the export health certificate. Allow at least a week for the process, and apply early in the 90-day waiting period so the certificate is ready when you need it. The DVS certificate and the EU AHC are separate documents; both are required for entry into Greece.

Cargo routing from Kuala Lumpur to Athens

Kuala Lumpur International (KLIA/KUL) has good connections to Athens via several major hubs. Malaysia Airlines Cargo, Singapore Airlines Cargo, Qatar Airways Cargo, and Turkish Airlines Cargo all serve this corridor. The choice of hub affects total transit time, which matters for pet welfare in the crate.

For most pets, Qatar via Doha or Singapore Airlines via Singapore works well, with each offering a single connection and reasonable transit times. For large dogs in big crates, confirm size and weight limits with the chosen carrier before booking cargo.

FAQ

Common questions

Yes, provided the full EU unlisted country protocol is followed. That means ISO microchip, valid rabies vaccination, FAVN titre test result of 0.5 IU/ml or above, completed 90-day wait from the blood draw date, and EU AHC issued within 10 days before arrival. If all that is in order, Greece applies no quarantine on arrival.
It depends on timing. If you previously did a FAVN titre test for another purpose and have a valid result of 0.5 IU/ml or above, the 90-day EU waiting period would start from that blood draw date, provided the result is still current and the vaccination has not lapsed. Talk to your vet about whether an existing titre result can be used. A fresh titre test is usually cleaner and avoids disputes at the EU border.
The EU Commission publishes a list of designated laboratories for rabies antibody titration. Check the current list on the European Commission Food Safety website before submitting a sample, as the approved laboratory list is periodically updated. Your pet transport agent or vet can confirm which laboratories are currently approved for samples from Malaysia.
As manifest cargo in an IATA-compliant crate. Pets do not travel in the passenger cabin on this route. Your pet will be in the temperature-controlled hold. You can travel on the same aircraft or ship separately as unaccompanied cargo. Either way, the crate must meet IATA Container Requirement 82 or equivalent for live animals.
