Overview
Latvia to Ireland follows EU pet passport rules with one extra step that catches many dog owners off guard: the Irish tapeworm treatment. Dogs must receive a praziquantel-based treatment from a licensed vet between 24 and 120 hours before their scheduled arrival in Ireland. The timing is measured from Dublin landing, not from Riga departure. Get the calculation right and the rest is straightforward. Cats travel on EU pet passport alone. Allow one to three weeks to arrange.

Critical points
Read before you book
⚠ The 24-120 hour window is measured from your Dublin arrival time, not from when you leave Riga. On a 5-hour journey with a connection, a treatment given 30-90 hours before landing in Dublin is typically within the window. Calculate specifically for your itinerary.
⚠ Without a correctly recorded tapeworm treatment, your dog will not be permitted to enter Ireland. There is no on-site remedy at Dublin Airport. The dog may be detained and returned at the owner's cost.
⚠ Cats are not subject to the tapeworm requirement. The rule applies to dogs only.
⚠ Air Baltic and Ryanair both serve the Riga-to-Ireland market but only carry cabin pets. For large dogs, a cargo routing via Warsaw (LOT) is required.

Calculating the tapeworm treatment window
Ireland requires the tapeworm treatment window to be measured from the scheduled arrival time in Ireland, not from when you leave Latvia. This distinction matters because, on a connecting journey, the treatment must be correctly timed against the final leg arrival.
A typical Riga to Dublin journey via a connecting hub takes between four and eight hours of travel. If your Dublin arrival is at, say, 14:00, the treatment window opens 120 hours before (five days earlier) and closes 24 hours before (the previous day at 14:00). Giving the treatment the morning of the departure day is usually well within the window for most travel itineraries.
Your Latvian vet records the treatment in your EU pet passport with the exact date, time, and product details. At Dublin, DAFM officials verify that the treatment falls within the required window. A treatment given one hour outside the window will not be accepted.
What happens at Dublin Airport
Pets arriving in Ireland by air enter through Dublin Airport’s designated Traveller’s Points of Entry. DAFM officials at the airport check the EU pet passport, verify the microchip reading, confirm the rabies vaccination is current, and for dogs, check that the tapeworm treatment is properly recorded within the 24-120 hour window.
For compliant pets with complete documentation, this check is brief. If any element is missing or outside the required window, the pet may be detained at the owner’s expense while the issue is resolved, or returned to the origin country.
Getting from Riga to Dublin with your pet
Riga does not have a direct pet cargo service to Dublin. For small pets, Ryanair and Air Baltic connect to Dublin via European hubs and accept cabin pets. For large dogs that need cargo transport, LOT Polish Airlines via Warsaw is the most practical option. Warsaw Chopin Airport has good live animal cargo handling facilities.
FAQ
Common questions
No. The tapeworm treatment must be administered by a licensed veterinarian and recorded officially in your EU pet passport with the vet’s details. Self-administered treatment is not valid for Irish entry. Make sure your Latvian vet stocks a licensed praziquantel product. Most companion animal practices routinely carry it.
No. Cats from Latvia do not require tapeworm treatment. Your cat needs a valid EU pet passport with a current microchip and a rabies vaccination given at least 21 days before arrival. No titre test, no quarantine. Standard EU pet travel rules apply.
Ryanair sometimes operates a direct or near-direct Riga-to-Dublin route seasonally. Check the current schedule when planning. Even on direct flights, the tapeworm timing window applies from Dublin landing time. Air Baltic connects via its Riga hub to European carriers with onward Dublin services.
