Critical points to read before you book
The RNATT blood collection date must be at least 180 days before export. This is non-negotiable and cannot be shortened. Getting this test done early, ideally 7-8 months before planned travel, is the most important action you can take.
Mickleham PEQF is in Melbourne. All Group 3 arrivals go there regardless of final Australian destination. Budget for domestic transport from Melbourne to your final city after quarantine release.
DAFF-approved laboratories are not all based in Latvia. Blood samples are typically shipped internationally. Ask your Latvian vet whether they have experience with DAFF RNATT samples. If not, consider using a pet transport agent who does.
Latvia has a cool climate: direct flights from Riga to Southeast Asian hubs during winter may face temperature-related cargo restrictions for some carriers. Discuss seasonal timing with your cargo agent.

Understanding the RNATT and the 180-day rule
The RNATT is not the same as a regular vaccine titre test. It is specifically a rabies neutralising antibody titre, conducted at a laboratory approved by Australia’s Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF). The blood sample is collected in Latvia by your vet and shipped to an approved laboratory, which typically returns results within 2-4 weeks.
DAFF’s rule is that the collection date must be at least 180 days before your pet leaves for Australia. So if you want your pet in Australia on 1 December, the blood must have been collected no later than 4 June. Not the date the result came back, not the date the certificate was issued. The physical date the needle went in.
This means planning the RNATT about 6.5 to 7 months before your target travel date is the minimum. Most experienced agents recommend planning for 8 months to allow for any reruns if the first result is below the required level.
Routing from Riga to Australian cities
Riga Airport (RIX) is the main Latvian hub, with airBaltic offering connections to many European hubs. Pet cargo to Australia is a multi-leg operation. The most established routings from Riga are:
Via Amsterdam (KLM): KLM operates RIX-AMS connections and from Schiphol has established Australia cargo services. This is a practical option with good live animal handling at Schiphol.
Via Frankfurt (Lufthansa connections): Good for reaching Singapore Airlines or Qantas flights onwards to Australia from Frankfurt.
Your pet will typically spend around 24-36 hours in transit depending on the hub connection timing. All cargo legs must explicitly confirm live animal acceptance. Do not assume a cargo booking is valid for pets without written confirmation.
FAQ
Common questions about Latvia to Australia pet transport
No, not for the import process. Australia’s DAFF classifies Latvia as Group 3, the same as the UK and most other EU countries. The RNATT, DAFF import permit, and 10-day Mickleham quarantine all apply. EU membership makes the export paperwork cleaner (the PVD endorsement system is reliable) but does not reduce Australian import requirements.
DAFF publishes a list of approved laboratories on their website at agriculture.gov.au. Most approved labs are in Australia, Europe, the USA, or the UK. Your Latvian vet will draw the blood and ship it appropriately. Ask your vet or a pet transport agent whether they have handled DAFF RNATT samples before confirming the laboratory choice.
Mickleham (the Post-Entry Quarantine Facility in Melbourne) charges approximately AUD 2,000 to AUD 4,500 for a 10-day stay, depending on the species and accommodation type. The owner pays these fees. DAFF invoices you before or at the start of quarantine. Verify the current fee schedule at agriculture.gov.au before finalising your budget.
