Microchip

Not a standalone CFIA requirement. What matters is the rabies certificate itself, which must identify the animal by breed, sex, colour and weight. Most owners still fit an ISO 11784/11785 chip before the rabies shot, since it keeps the paperwork consistent and most airlines expect one anyway.

Rabies vaccination

Required for dogs and cats over three months old. The certificate must be signed by a licensed vet, written in English or French (or accompanied by a certified translation), and state the vaccine's trade name, batch or serial number, and expiry date. A pet under three months, travelling with its owner and with a verifiable age, needs no vaccination at all. Rabies titre test

Not required, for a dog or cat from any country. Canada runs no rabies antibody titre regime for personal pets at all, a genuinely different structure from the CDC or DAFF systems this site covers for other destinations. Kosovo's absence from the CFIA's own high-risk list (last reviewed 13 March 2025) doesn't even come into it, since the titre question never arises for a travelling companion animal.

Quarantine

None for a pet arriving with a compliant certificate.

Import permit

No CFIA import permit for a personal pet. The commercial import ban that applies to dogs from CFIA's high-risk list, in force since September 2022, covers resale, adoption, breeding, show and research dogs, not a pet travelling with its own owner. Kosovo isn't on that list regardless.

Health certificate

The FVA-endorsed certificate, or an equivalent signed by a licensed Kosovan vet, serves as the entry document. CBSA officers check it against the pet at the port of entry alongside a standard customs declaration.

Export permit

No standalone export permit separate from the certification process. The Agjencia e Ushqimit dhe Veterinarise (Kosovo Food and Veterinary Agency, FVA) endorses the health certificate that clears a pet to leave Pristina.

Veterinary inspection

Pre-export clinical check by an FVA-registered veterinarian, confirming the animal is healthy and that its vaccination record matches what Canada expects on the certificate.

Government endorsement

FVA endorsement is required before an airline will accept the paperwork at Pristina International Airport. No fixed fee or turnaround is published, so confirm both with a registered vet directly.
