AMS to ARN feeder flight: approximately EUR 80 to EUR 180
EU-format health certificate from Kazakh vet: KZT 30,000 to KZT 100,000 (approximately EUR 60 to EUR 200)

Critical points

Kazakhstan's standard export certificate is EAEU-format. An EU-format certificate is required for Sweden. Confirm your vet can prepare this format before starting the process.

Air Astana flies to Amsterdam (AMS), not Stockholm directly. Factor in the AMS-to-ARN short connection.

The 90-day wait from blood draw date is absolute. Record the blood draw date precisely.

Microchip before vaccination. The sequence is legally required under EU rules.

Airlines

Approved carriers on this route

AirlineNotesType
Air AstanaAir Astana operates direct flights from Almaty (ALA) or Astana (NQZ) to Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS). From AMS, Stockholm Arlanda (ARN) is a short feeder flight on SAS, Norwegian, or KLM. This routing keeps the main long-haul leg with Kazakhstan's national carrier and uses a natural Scandinavian hub. Air Astana Cargo accepts live animals.Cargo Only
Turkish AirlinesVia Istanbul (IST). ALA or NQZ to IST then IST to Stockholm Arlanda (ARN). Single-carrier routing with Turkish Airlines Cargo. Temperature embargoes during Turkish summer months.Cargo Only
FinnairVia Helsinki (HEL). Connection from ALA or NQZ to HEL (via hub), then HEL to ARN. Finnair Cargo accepts live animals on some routes. Helsinki is geographically very close to Stockholm.Cargo Only
LOT Polish AirlinesVia Warsaw (WAW). ALA or NQZ to WAW then WAW to ARN. LOT accepts live animal cargo. Warsaw is a practical Eastern European hub for Scandinavia-bound cargo.Cargo Only

Sweden's EU import requirements for Kazakh pets

Sweden applies EU Regulation 576/2013 to all pets from unlisted third countries. Kazakhstan is unlisted. The required steps: ISO microchip implanted before vaccination, rabies vaccination, FAVN titre test at an EU-approved laboratory (minimum 0.5 IU/ml, blood drawn 30+ days after vaccination), 90-day wait from blood draw date, and Kazakh Veterinary Committee-endorsed EU-format health certificate valid 10 days.

Jordbruksverket (jordbruksverket.se) inspects incoming pets at Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN). Compliant arrivals are released without quarantine.

Air Astana: from Almaty to Amsterdam to Stockholm

Air Astana’s direct service from Almaty (ALA) or Astana (NQZ) to Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) is the strongest routing option for Kazakhstan to Sweden. Air Astana Cargo accepts live animals on these routes.

From Amsterdam, Stockholm Arlanda (ARN) is just under two hours by air. SAS, Norwegian, and KLM all offer regular AMS-to-ARN services. Your pet arrives at AMS from Kazakhstan, is transferred to the feeder carrier (or you coordinate cargo through to ARN), and arrives at Arlanda in good time.

The alternative is Turkish Airlines via Istanbul, which operates as a single-carrier routing from ALA or NQZ through IST to ARN. This is simpler in terms of cargo booking but involves a Middle Eastern hub rather than the Amsterdam-to-Stockholm Scandinavian routing.

EU-format certificate: the documentation challenge

Kazakhstan routinely issues EAEU-format veterinary certificates for exports to Russia, Belarus, Armenia, and other EAEU members. Sweden requires an EU-format health certificate under EU Regulation 2020/692 for non-commercial pet movement from unlisted third countries.

These are different documents with different structure and content. Not all vets in Kazakhstan will be familiar with or able to prepare the EU-format version. Work with an IPATA-registered agent experienced on Kazakhstan-to-EU routes, or identify a Kazakh vet with EU export documentation experience, before beginning the process.

FAQ

Common questions about this route

Kazakhstan is not on the EU’s approved list of third countries for pet travel. EU Regulation 576/2013 requires pets from unlisted countries to have a FAVN titre test and complete a 90-day wait before entering any EU country including Sweden.
Air Astana does not fly directly to Stockholm. They operate from Almaty (ALA) and Astana (NQZ) to Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS). From AMS, a short feeder flight to Stockholm Arlanda (ARN) completes the journey. Air Astana Cargo accepts live animals on their Amsterdam routes.
No. Sweden requires an EU-format health certificate under EU Regulation 2020/692. Kazakhstan’s standard EAEU-format export certificate is not valid for EU entry. Your Kazakh vet must prepare and have endorsed a specific EU-format document.
Jordbruksverket officials at ARN cargo terminal check the Kazakh Veterinary Committee-endorsed EU-format health certificate, verify the microchip reading, confirm vaccination and titre test records, and assess the pet’s condition.
A minimum of 22 to 28 weeks (five to six months) from the first vet appointment to Sweden arrival. The 90-day wait from the titre test blood draw is the main constraint.
