Overview
The Netherlands applies the standard EU unlisted country rules to pets from Jamaica: FAVN titre test, 90-day wait, and VSD-endorsed EU health certificate. Plan five to six months ahead. Schiphol is a well-organised entry point for live animal cargo and the NVWA inspection is familiar with Caribbean origin pets. Most routings go via London or a US hub to Amsterdam.

Critical points

Read before you book

⚠ Jamaica is EU unlisted for pet travel. The FAVN test and 90-day wait apply regardless of other Jamaica-EU links.
⚠ International sample shipping from Kingston to an EU-approved lab requires correct preservation and documentation. Use an experienced vet or agent.
⚠ The 90-day wait starts from blood draw date, not when the results arrive.

Organising the FAVN test from Kingston

The FAVN titre test must go to an EU-approved laboratory. Jamaica has none, so the blood sample needs to travel internationally. Your vet in Kingston draws the blood, packages it as a biological sample (typically with a preservative), and ships it to an EU-approved lab in France, Germany, Belgium, the UK, or another approved location.

The EU maintains the approved lab list at food.ec.europa.eu. Building in two to three weeks for shipping and processing is realistic. The 90-day wait clock starts from the blood draw date, not from when the result comes back. This means you can draw blood, wait for the result to confirm a pass, and the 90-day wait is already running by the time you have your result.

Schiphol Animal Hotel and the NVWA inspection

Amsterdam Schiphol’s Animal Hotel is operated by an independent company and is the holding facility for live animal cargo arrivals at AMS. NVWA officers conduct inspections at the Animal Hotel. For Jamaica-origin pets, the NVWA checks the EU-format health certificate endorsed by the VSD, the titre test result, vaccination records, and microchip identity.

The process is documented and well-practised at Schiphol. Most compliant pets clear within a few hours of arrival. Your pet transport agent should provide the NVWA with document pre-notification if possible, which can speed up the inspection on arrival day.

FAQ

Common questions

No. If your pet is imported into the UK, it goes through UK border controls and UK veterinary inspection (not the Dutch NVWA). To import into the Netherlands, your pet must arrive at and be inspected at a Netherlands-designated travellers’ point of entry. Schiphol is the practical choice for cargo.
No. Pet import rules are governed by EU animal health law, not bilateral trade relationships. The FAVN test and 90-day wait apply equally to Jamaica regardless of trade volumes or historical ties.
If the vaccination was maintained continuously without gaps and the previous titre result passed (0.5 IU/mL or above), that result remains valid indefinitely. You do not need to retest annually. If there was any lapse in vaccination coverage, the titre result is invalid and a new test is required.
