Costs

What this route typically costs

Rail: Trenitalia/SNCF ticket Milan-Paris (EUR 60-200 depending on service and class)
Drive: fuel + any tunnel tolls (Mont Blanc tunnel toll approx EUR 50 one-way)
Air France or ITA cabin pet fee (EUR 50-70 supplement)
EU Pet Passport renewal if expired (vet fee EUR 20-60)

Critical points

Rabies vaccination must be current and within the manufacturer's validity period. An expired vaccination makes the EU Pet Passport invalid for travel.

France's Categorie 1 and 2 breed restrictions apply. Check your breed against French rules if you have a Rottweiler, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, or similar breed.

If driving through the Mont Blanc Tunnel, confirm current tunnel pet rules before travel.

Your pet's journey from Italy to France

Start with the paperwork check, because it’s quick. EU Pet Passport. ISO microchip number recorded and matching. Rabies vaccination current and within validity. Those three things. If they’re all in order, the administrative side of this move is done.

Now for the interesting part: how do you get there?

The Frecciarossa high-speed train from Milan Centrale to Paris Gare de Lyon takes about 7 hours. Turin to Paris is a bit under 5 hours. It’s a comfortable journey through some of Europe’s most dramatic rail scenery, with your pet in a carrier under the seat beside you. Trenitalia and SNCF both allow small pets in carriers on international services. Larger dogs travel with a ticket, muzzle, and lead on most services.

Driving gives you more flexibility, particularly for larger dogs. Milan to Nice via the A26/A10 takes about 4 hours. Turin to Marseille via Ventimiglia is 3.5 hours. You cross the Italian-French border without stopping for a pet inspection, EU free movement applies. Keep the passport accessible in the car, but you won’t typically be waved over for a pet check at an internal EU border.

Flying works if you’re already in a city with direct France connections. Air France from Rome or Milan to Paris is under 2 hours. The airport overhead (check-in, security, boarding) makes door-to-door time competitive with rail only for city-centre-to-airport situations. Small pets go in cabin; larger pets in cargo.

What France will want to see

France applies EU Regulation 576/2013. An official from DGAL might check your documents at a motorway stop or on arrival by rail, it’s uncommon but it happens. They want to see: EU Pet Passport, microchip number matching your pet when scanned, current rabies vaccination.

If you’re bringing a dog and your breed is on France’s Categorie 2 list (Rottweilers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers), you need to know the French rules for keeping these dogs, muzzle in public, owner registration. They’re not banned, but they’re regulated. Categorie 1 (undefined fighting-type breed appearance) dogs cannot legally be imported.

France restricts Categorie 1 (fighting-type appearance) and Categorie 2 dogs (including Rottweilers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers).
