Indonesia to Thailand vs Indonesia to Malaysia: which is simpler?
Both Thailand and Malaysia are common destinations for owners relocating from Indonesia, but the documentation requirements differ considerably.
Thailand requires a DLD import permit by email (at least 7 days before travel) and has no titre test and no routine quarantine. Preparation takes 4-8 weeks and the Thailand side of the process is straightforward if the email application is submitted on time.
Malaysia requires the RNATT titre test, with blood drawn at least 3 months before entry and at least 30 days after the rabies vaccination. Malaysia also requires a DVS import permit submitted only by a licensed Malaysian agent, and a minimum 7-day quarantine at a DVS facility on arrival. Preparation takes 16-20 weeks and costs are considerably higher.
For owners with a choice of destination, Thailand is substantially less demanding to prepare for. Malaysia’s RNATT requirement sets the pace for its longer timeline.
The Thailand DLD permit process from Jakarta or Bali
The DLD import permit is applied for by email directly to the Animal Quarantine Station (AQS) at your intended arrival airport. For Bangkok Suvarnabhumi, that is the Suvarnabhumi AQS. For Chiang Mai, it is the Chiang Mai AQS.
Send your pet’s microchip number, vaccination records, proposed travel date, and a completed application form to the AQS email address. Processing takes 5-7 Thai business days once all documents are received. The permit is emailed back and is valid for 60 days from issue.
If you are entering at Bangkok, allow 10-12 business days to be safe given posting and processing time from Indonesia. A Bangkok-based pet relocation agent can handle this application and reduce the risk of documentation errors.
