Requirements

United Kingdom entry requirements

Every item below must be in place before your pet can enter. We verify and track each one.

Microchip

Rabies vaccination
Required. Primary course must be completed after microchipping. Titre test blood draw cannot happen until at least 30 days after the final vaccination.
Rabies titre test
Required. India is an unlisted country under UK APHA rules. Blood draw at least 30 days after rabies vaccination. Result must reach 0.5 IU/ml or above at an EU/UK-approved laboratory. After a passing result, a 3-calendar-month wait applies before UK entry. Source: UK APHA, apha.service.gov.uk
Quarantine
No routine quarantine provided all documentation is correct and the 3-month post-titre wait has been observed. Pets arriving without correct paperwork may face detention or return at owner's expense.
Import permit
No formal import permit required. The AHC acts as the travel document and must be correctly completed and endorsed.
Health certificate
Animal Health Certificate (AHC) required. Issued by an official Indian vet in the UK-approved format, endorsed by AQCS. Valid 10 days from issue for entry into Great Britain. Dogs only: tapeworm treatment (praziquantel, for Echinococcus multilocularis) must be administered by a vet 24-120 hours before arrival in Great Britain and recorded in the AHC.

Titre test laboratory fee: approximately INR 4,000-8,000 depending on laboratory and turnaround

Tapeworm treatment (dogs only, 24-120 hours before GB arrival): recorded by Indian vet in AHC

Critical points

India is an UNLISTED country for UK entry. The 3-month post-titre wait is mandatory and cannot be waived. Allow a minimum of 4-6 months preparation time from the point of microchipping.

The microchip must be implanted before or on the same day as the first rabies vaccination. If the vaccination predates the chip, it does not count and the vaccination course must be restarted.

The AQCS NOC is required for all pet exports from India. Without it, the health certificate cannot be correctly endorsed and airlines will not accept the pet.

Tapeworm treatment for dogs is mandatory for entry into Great Britain. It must be administered 24-120 hours before arrival and recorded by a vet in the AHC.

Verify current requirements with UK APHA (apha.service.gov.uk) before finalising travel dates. Rules can change.

UK entry rules for pets from India

The UK’s Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) classifies countries into listed and unlisted groups. India falls into the unlisted group, which carries the most demanding set of pre-entry requirements. The sequence is fixed: ISO microchip first, then a completed rabies vaccination primary course, then a titre test blood draw at least 30 days after the final vaccination. The blood must go to an EU/UK-approved laboratory and the result must reach 0.5 IU/ml or above. Once a passing result is confirmed, the 3-month calendar wait begins from the date the blood was drawn, not the date the result came back. Source: APHA, apha.service.gov.uk.

Dogs also need tapeworm treatment for Echinococcus multilocularis, administered by a vet between 24 and 120 hours before arrival in Great Britain. This must be recorded in the Animal Health Certificate with the drug name, dose, and date. Cats are not subject to this requirement. If you are entering through Northern Ireland rather than Great Britain, different rules may apply, so check with APHA before booking.

Your pet must arrive at a designated Border Control Post. London Heathrow (Terminal 4 and 5 cargo) and Manchester are the main options for flights from India. Border Force checks documentation on arrival. If any step is out of order, out of date, or missing, your pet may be detained in quarantine at your expense or returned. Confirm the BCP with your cargo agent before finalising travel arrangements.

The AQCS export process from India

On the Indian side, AQCS (Animal Quarantine and Certification Services, aqcsindia.gov.in) oversees the export of pet animals. You need a No-Objection Certificate from AQCS before your pet can travel on any international flight. Apply to the AQCS office nearest to your departure city: regional offices are in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore, and Hyderabad. Allow at least 4-6 weeks before your travel date, as processing times vary by office and season.

Your pet also needs two clinical examinations: the first approximately 7 days before travel, and the second within 2 days of departure. Both must be carried out by a vet registered with AQCS. The Animal Health Certificate in UK-approved format is issued following the second examination and must be endorsed by AQCS before you travel. The certificate is valid for 10 days from the date of issue, so timing the examinations to fit your flight date matters.

AQCS is unfamiliar territory for many first-time exporters. The process is straightforward when managed by someone who knows the system, but errors in documentation format or sequencing can cause delays. An IPATA-registered agent based in India will manage the AQCS process on your behalf, which is the most reliable approach for this route.

Airlines for the India to UK pet cargo route

All pet transport on international India-UK flights is cargo only. No airline currently accepts pets in the cabin on this sector. Your pet will travel in a pressurised, temperature-controlled hold section in an IATA-compliant crate. The crate must be the correct size: your pet must be able to stand at full height, turn around, and lie down comfortably.

British Airways via IAG Cargo and Air India are the most direct options, both operating non-stop between Indian cities and London Heathrow. Lufthansa, KLM, and Emirates offer connecting routes through Frankfurt, Amsterdam, and Dubai. Connecting flights add journey time but can offer more flexible scheduling or better capacity for larger crates.

Confirm live animal cargo booking directly with the airline cargo department, not just through your passenger ticket booking. Cargo space for live animals is limited and managed separately from passenger reservations. Book early. Your pet transport agent handles this if you are using one, which is strongly recommended on this route.

FAQ

Common questions about this route

A minimum of 4-6 months from the point of microchipping. The 3-month wait after a passing rabies titre test cannot be shortened. Add time for the titre test blood draw at least 30 days after vaccination, plus the AQCS NOC process and health certificate examinations. Starting too late is the most common problem on this route.
India is classified as an unlisted country by UK APHA, which reflects India’s rabies status. The titre test and 3-month wait are required from all unlisted countries to confirm arriving pets have effective rabies protection. There is no exemption or fast-track option.
The AQCS (Animal Quarantine and Certification Services) No-Objection Certificate is an Indian government document confirming your pet is cleared for export. Without it, the export health certificate cannot be correctly endorsed and airlines will not carry your pet. Apply to the AQCS regional office in your city at least 4-6 weeks before travel. Source: aqcsindia.gov.in
Yes. Dogs entering Great Britain must be treated for Echinococcus multilocularis tapeworm by a vet between 24 and 120 hours before arrival. The treatment and timing must be recorded in the Animal Health Certificate. Cats are not subject to this requirement. If the timing window is missed, your dog cannot enter Great Britain on that date.
No. All airlines operating India-UK international routes require pets to travel as cargo. Your pet will be in a pressurised, temperature-controlled hold. Book cargo space directly with the airline or through a registered pet transport agent well in advance of your travel date.
