Importing Your Pet to Zimbabwe

Two permits run Zimbabwe pet imports, and neither is difficult. The Zimbabwean import permit comes from the Department of Veterinary Services in Harare on a written application (3 to 5 days to process, valid for six months). The origin side needs an official government health certificate issued within 10 days of entry; from South Africa, by far the biggest origin, that is the Inter-territorial Movement permit, which state vet offices certify free of charge for SADC destinations.

There is no quarantine for compliant pets and no titre test; Zimbabwe does not even accept a titre as a vaccination substitute. The rabies shot must sit in the 30-day-to-12-month window at entry. Arrivals come by air into Robert Gabriel Mugabe International in Harare, as manifested cargo on Airlink or SAA, or by road, most commonly through the Beitbridge crossing with the same document set.

Permit first, then the origin paperwork

Apply to Harare early: the permit is valid six months, so there is no reason to leave it late. The application states the pet’s breed, age and origin with the rabies certificate attached. One caution on conflicting advice: a widely-read travel directory claims SADC-origin pets are exempt from the permit, but the South African government’s own veterinary infosheet and SA pet shippers both work on the basis it is required. Get it and travel argument-proof.

The health certificate window then drives the final week: issued within 10 days of entry, still valid on arrival, with internal and external parasite treatment recorded shortly before travel.

Flying versus driving

The Johannesburg to Harare flight is 1 hour 50 minutes with roughly 80 nonstops weekly, but the cabin is closed to pets on all of them: Airlink and SAA carry animals on regional flights only as manifested cargo under an air waybill. SA shippers also refuse chemical sedation, using only mild herbal calmers, so crate familiarisation beforehand matters.

Driving through Beitbridge is the other legitimate route and needs no crate: the Inter-territorial Movement permit is not mode-specific. Carry original documents and expect them to be checked.
