Critical points to read before you book

Apply for the MAAIF import permit 8-10 weeks before travel at maaif.go.ug. It is the prerequisite for Uganda entry.

The Hungarian EU pet passport is for intra-EU travel only. The NÉBIH export health certificate is required for Uganda.

Budapest has no direct service to Entebbe. A hub connection is required. Wizz Air, a major carrier at BUD, does not accept pets; use Lufthansa or other full-service carriers.

MAAIF officers at Entebbe inspect both the permit and the health certificate. Both must be present and correctly formatted.

Not all airlines accept live animals on this route. We know which carriers to use and how to book.

Routing from Budapest to Entebbe

Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD) has no direct service to Entebbe. Two main routings are practical for Hungary-to-Uganda pet cargo.

Via Brussels: Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, or another full-service carrier connects BUD to Brussels Zaventem (BRU), where Brussels Airlines operates its established BRU-EBB East Africa service. This is a two-leg journey with a single European hub transfer. Confirm live animal cargo acceptance with Brussels Airlines Cargo for the BRU-EBB leg.

Via Frankfurt and Addis Ababa: Lufthansa connects BUD to Frankfurt (FRA), then Ethiopian Cargo to ADD, and ADD-EBB. Ethiopian Cargo has the widest live animal programme in Africa. Note that Wizz Air operates from BUD but does not accept pets; only full-service carriers can be used for connections to African cargo routes. Kenya Airways via Nairobi provides a third option with Gulf or European connections accessible from Budapest.

NÉBIH export health certificate for Uganda

The Hungarian EU pet passport is valid for intra-EU travel only. For Uganda, the required document is an official health certificate issued by an authorised official veterinarian and endorsed by NÉBIH (Nemzeti Élelmiszerlánc-biztonsági Hivatal - National Food Chain Safety Office) at nebih.gov.hu.

Contact NÉBIH or your regional veterinary authority to identify an authorised official vet. The certificate must be issued within 10 days of travel. Book the appointment and allow time for NÉBIH endorsement within that window.

Confirm the certificate format meets Uganda’s requirements, which differ from EU-format documents. A transport agent experienced in Hungarian exports to Africa can verify the correct format for MAAIF inspection at Entebbe.

MAAIF: Uganda's import permit requirement

Uganda’s Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) at maaif.go.ug manages companion animal imports. The MAAIF permit is the prerequisite document for Uganda entry. Apply at least 8-10 weeks before travel with your pet’s microchip number, species, breed, vaccination history, and travel date.

Follow up after submitting to confirm progress. On arrival at Entebbe, MAAIF inspects the permit alongside the NÉBIH health certificate. No quarantine applies for compliant arrivals.
