Airlines

Carriers on this route

Not all airlines accept live animals on this route. We know every carrier policy for this corridor.

LOT Polish Airlines via Warsaw
LOT connects Budapest Ferenc Liszt (BUD) to Warsaw Chopin (WAW), from which LOT serves Vilnius (VNO) directly. Warsaw to Vilnius is under an hour. LOT Cargo handles live animals on both sectors. The BUD-WAW-VNO routing is the most practical for cargo pets from Hungary to Lithuania.
Cargo and Cabin
airBaltic via Riga
airBaltic connects Budapest to Vilnius via Riga (RIX). Riga is airBaltic's home hub. An alternative to the LOT via Warsaw routing. airBaltic Cargo at Riga for larger dogs. The RIX to VNO hop is under an hour.
Cargo and Cabin
Wizz Air
Wizz Air operates Budapest to various destinations including some Baltic routes. IMPORTANT: Wizz Air does NOT accept live animals in the cargo hold. Cabin pets only under Wizz Air's specific size and weight limits. Not suitable for large dogs.
Cabin Only

What this route typically costs

EU pet passport issue or update: approximately EUR 50-100

Cabin pet fees BUD to VNO via hub: approximately EUR 55-110
LOT Cargo or airBaltic Cargo fee for large dogs: EUR 380-900
IATA travel crate: EUR 60-250
Total, small cabin pet: EUR 175-360
Total, large dog in cargo: EUR 530-1,150

Critical points

Wizz Air does NOT accept live animals in the cargo hold. For large dogs from Budapest, use LOT via Warsaw or airBaltic via Riga.

Lithuania has breed-specific legislation covering Pitbull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, and similar breeds. If your dog is a covered type, check VMVT requirements at vmvt.lt before travel.

The microchip must be recorded in the EU pet passport before the rabies vaccination. Verify this sequence.

LOT via Warsaw keeps the cargo journey within one carrier, which reduces coordination risk at the connection point.

The Budapest departure challenge: Wizz Air and cargo pets

A significant share of Budapest’s international traffic moves on Wizz Air. The airline is Budapest’s largest carrier, with a wide European network. But Wizz Air’s policy is firm: no live animals in the cargo hold, on any route. If your dog is too large for the cabin, Wizz Air cannot be the carrier.

For large dogs moving from Budapest to Vilnius, the practical options are:

LOT Polish Airlines via Warsaw: Budapest Ferenc Liszt (BUD) to Warsaw Chopin (WAW) on LOT, then Warsaw to Vilnius (VNO) on LOT. Warsaw to Vilnius is under an hour. LOT Cargo handles the live animal booking across both legs. Keeping the animal within one carrier from Budapest to Vilnius removes any coordination gap at the Warsaw transfer.

airBaltic via Riga: Budapest to Riga (RIX) on airBaltic, then Riga to Vilnius. The RIX to VNO hop is short. airBaltic Cargo at Riga, the airline’s home hub, handles the arrival processing. This routing adds time compared to the LOT direct via Warsaw, but works well when LOT capacity is limited.

Small cabin pets have more options. Wizz Air accepts cabin pets under their specific size and weight rules. LOT and airBaltic both take cabin pets on the connecting routes.

Lithuania's breed rules: the additional check for certain dog types

Lithuania maintains domestic legislation on potentially dangerous dog breeds. The rules apply to dogs in Lithuania regardless of their EU country of origin. For a Hungarian owner moving a dog to Vilnius, the EU pet passport satisfies the import requirements under EU Regulation 576/2013. But if the dog is a Pitbull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, or a breed or type classed as potentially dangerous under Lithuanian law, there are additional domestic requirements.

These may include muzzling in public, registration with local municipal authorities, and insurance or liability requirements. The specific rules depend on the dog’s classification. Contact VMVT (Valstybinė maisto ir veterinarijos tarnyba) at vmvt.lt before the move to confirm what applies to your dog.

For owners of standard companion breeds, this section does not apply. The VMVT spot check at Vilnius Airport for a non-restricted breed with a valid EU pet passport is brief.

FAQ

Common questions

No. Wizz Air does not accept live animals in the cargo hold on any route. Only cabin-sized pets can travel with Wizz Air, under their specific restrictions. For a large dog from Budapest, use LOT Polish Airlines via Warsaw or airBaltic via Riga.
No. Hungary and Lithuania are both EU member states. EU Regulation 576/2013 does not require a titre test for intra-EU pet movements. A current rabies vaccination recorded in the EU pet passport is sufficient.
Budapest to Warsaw on LOT is approximately 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours. Warsaw to Vilnius is approximately 45 minutes. Total journey including connection time at Warsaw is typically 4 to 6 hours. The short final leg from Warsaw to Vilnius keeps overall journey time manageable.
Pitbull-type dogs fall within Lithuania’s breed-specific legislation. Entry is not necessarily prohibited, but registration and compliance with domestic requirements apply. Contact VMVT at vmvt.lt to understand the specific requirements for your dog’s type before making travel arrangements. The EU pet passport covers import compliance; the breed legislation is a separate domestic matter.
