Pet Transport from Guyana to Canada
If you are relocating a pet from Guyana to Canada, the process is manageable once you know the sequence. Allow around 6-10 weeks and follow the steps in order to stay on track. Pets with correct documentation skip quarantine entirely. Use the timeline below to …

What this route typically costs
Critical points
Guyana's spot on CFIA's high-risk-for-dog-rabies list, last updated 13 March 2025, sets a 7-month minimum age and restricts entry to five designated Canadian airports, neither of which applies to Barbados, a Caribbean neighbour that isn't on the list.
Guyana also sits on the CDC's high-risk list for dogs entering the United States. That has no bearing on Canadian entry, but it does mean American Airlines Cargo won't accept a new dog booking originating there, ruling out a Miami or JFK routing for dogs (cats aren't affected). Caribbean Airlines' new daily Toronto nonstop avoids the problem entirely.
The GLDA export certificate is quick and cheap, 4 working days and G$5,000. It confirms the pet is healthy and legally exportable; it says nothing about CFIA's own age, microchip and import permit requirements, which run on a separate track.
Approved carriers for this route
Not all airlines accept live animals. We book only with carriers that handle live animal cargo correctly.
How Canada handles incoming pets
What experienced owners do
Get your pet used to the travel crate weeks in advance. A calm, crate-familiar animal travels far better than one meeting the crate for the first time at the airport.
Confirm live animal acceptance on every flight segment before booking. Not all aircraft or connections take pets, and cargo terms can differ leg to leg.
Keep every original document together and take copies. Border officials want originals, and a missing signature or date can hold up clearance.
Work backwards from your travel date and add a buffer. Fixed waiting periods mean a single slipped appointment can push the whole move back by weeks.
