Critical points

Dogs must be at least 7 months old on the date of entry. A puppy that doesn't meet this age threshold cannot travel to Canada from Guatemala as a personal pet, whatever the rest of the paperwork looks like.

Guatemala is on CFIA's high-risk dog rabies list, but the restriction that follows from that listing applies to commercial dog imports, not an owner-accompanied personal pet. Don't let an agent or a rescue-import horror story convince you a personal pet is banned; it isn't.

Entry has to be through one of five designated airports, Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary or Halifax. A routing that lands anywhere else is not usable for a high-risk-country dog, regardless of what the airline quotes.

The rules for bringing a pet into Canada

Canada has a clear set of import requirements that are manageable with some planning. Follow them in order and keep an eye on the dates that cannot move.

How to keep this move on track

Check the airline’s crate size and labelling rules early. An undersized or wrongly labelled crate is a frequent reason pets are refused at check-in.

Ask about temperature embargoes for your travel window. Summer and winter cargo restrictions can rule out certain routes and dates entirely.

Book the titre test laboratory well ahead. Approved labs have limited slots and the sample takes time to process, so this is not something to leave to the final weeks.

Microchip before you vaccinate. The microchip must be in place before the rabies shot for the vaccination to count, and getting this order wrong is the most common and costly mistake.

FAQ

Common questions

No, not for personal pets. Guatemala is on CFIA’s high-risk dog rabies list, and CFIA’s 2022 measure bans commercial dog imports, rescues, sales and breeding stock from high-risk countries. An owner-accompanied personal pet is a different category and can still travel, provided the age, microchip, permit and designated-airport requirements are all met.
At least 7 months old on the date of entry. This applies specifically to dogs from high-risk countries; there’s no equivalent age floor for cats. Source: CFIA, checked 15 July 2026.
One of five designated airports with animal inspection facilities: Toronto Pearson, Montreal Trudeau, Vancouver International, Calgary International or Halifax Stanfield. A routing into any other Canadian airport is not usable for a high-risk-country dog.
No. CFIA’s high-risk-country measures are specific to dog rabies and apply to dogs. Cats entering Canada from Guatemala face Canada’s ordinary minimal federal requirements, regardless of origin.
