What this route typically costs
Critical points
Ljubljana Airport (LJU) is a small regional airport. Direct cargo services from Germany are very limited. Plan on the Vienna (VIE) connection for most cargo movements. Austrian Airlines is the most practical carrier for this route.
Slovenia classifies certain dogs as potentially dangerous, including Rottweiler and Pit Bull-type breeds. These may require registration and muzzling in public under Slovenian animal welfare legislation. Contact UVHVR at uvhvr.gov.si before travelling with these breeds.
The overland route from Bavaria is a genuinely practical option for large dogs. Munich to Ljubljana takes about 4.5 hours via the Salzburg and Villach autobahns. The route crosses into Austria and Slovenia, both EU countries with open borders for EU pets with valid passports.
The EU pet passport must be issued by an official vet (amtlicher Tierarzt) in Germany. Confirm your vet has official status before travel.
Flying or driving from Germany to Slovenia?
This is a real question on the Germany-Slovenia corridor. Ljubljana Airport handles commercial flights but its capacity for live animal cargo is limited compared to larger EU hubs. Most cargo movements into LJU route through Vienna, which adds a connection.
For small pets in cabin, Austrian Airlines via Vienna is the cleanest air option. The FRA to VIE leg is about 1.5 hours, and the VIE to LJU hop is about 45 minutes. This is manageable even with a nervous pet.
For owners in Munich, Augsburg, or Freiburg, the overland route is worth considering. Munich to Ljubljana is roughly 4.5 hours via the Salzburg motorway and Villach. All three countries crossed (Germany, Austria, Slovenia) are EU members with open borders. No customs stops, no border vet checks for EU pets with valid passports. A large dog that handles car travel better than air travel may be much less stressed on the road.
Slovenia's regulations for potentially dangerous breeds
Slovenia does not have an outright ban on breeds like Latvia’s Pit Bull prohibition, but Slovenian animal welfare law does categorise certain dogs as potentially dangerous. Rottweilers, Pit Bull-type dogs, and other listed breeds require registration and must be muzzled and on a lead in public places in Slovenia.
If you are relocating with one of these breeds, contact the UVHVR (uvhvr.gov.si) before travel to understand the current requirements. Slovenian authorities take animal welfare regulations seriously, and arriving with a listed breed without the correct paperwork creates problems at the local level even if the EU passport clears the airport entry.
