What this route typically costs
Critical points
Rwanda is one of East Africa's more organised destinations for pet imports, but the RAB permit must be in place before travel.
Brussels Airlines is the most established option for European-Kigali cargo. Confirm their live animal acceptance directly before booking.
The transit time is long. Ensure your pet's crate is appropriately equipped for an extended journey.
Ethiopian Airlines Cargo via Addis Ababa is a solid backup option. ADD-KGL is a well-served route.
Why Brussels is the best hub for Germany-Rwanda pet cargo
When transporting a pet from Germany to Rwanda, the choice of hub matters. Brussels Airlines is the most established European carrier for Kigali, operating direct BRU-KGL flights and with a history of handling live animal cargo on African routes. RwandAir also operates BRU-KGL and is Rwanda’s own airline.
Getting from Germany to Brussels for the onward KGL connection is straightforward: Lufthansa connections from Frankfurt (FRA) or Munich (MUC) to Brussels (BRU) work well, and the Air France-KLM group also has connections. The total journey time via Brussels is typically 12-16 hours, which is manageable for most healthy adult pets.
Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa (ADD) is a strong alternative, particularly for the cargo-only movement of larger dogs. Ethiopian Airlines Cargo has well-established African route networks and experience with live animal movements. The ADD-KGL leg is a short hop from Addis.
Rwanda's import process and the RAB
Rwanda’s Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB) is the authority responsible for live animal imports. You need a RAB import permit before your pet travels. Contact rab.gov.rw to start the permit process at least eight to ten weeks before your travel date.
Rwanda is one of the more efficiently organised East African countries for administrative processes, but the RAB permit still takes time and should not be left to the last minute. Your pet’s documentation, including species, breed, microchip number, vaccination history, and origin country, will be required for the application.
On arrival at Kigali International Airport (KGL), the RAB veterinary inspector checks your documents. Rwanda does not impose routine quarantine on pets arriving from low-risk countries like Germany. A compliant, well-documented pet from Germany should clear without difficulty.
