Pet Transport from Germany to Qatar

The requirement is specific in a way most are not. Blood must be taken more than 30 days after the rabies vaccination, must reach above 0.5 IU/ml at an approved laboratory, and must be dated between 3 and 12 months before entry.

Read that as two constraints rather than one. You cannot arrive sooner than three months after the draw, which is the wait. And you cannot arrive later than twelve months after it, which is an expiry. In practice that gives a nine-month window in which the pet may travel, and if the move slips past it, the blood has to be drawn again.

The vaccination itself must be inactivated or recombinant, given at or after microchipping, for pets over three months old.

Qatar’s import permit must be obtained before the pet arrives, no earlier than 30 days beforehand because it is valid for 30 days, and it is usually issued within one working day through the Ministry of Municipality’s animal resources function, either online through the animal certificates portal or in person.

The catch sits in who may apply. For a family relocating on a work visa, that means the human paperwork has to complete before the pet’s can start, and it is the most common reason a pet arrives weeks or months after the rest of the household. Plan the sequence deliberately rather than assuming the animal travels with you.

One further note on ages: published sources disagree on Qatar’s minimum, with one giving four months and another seven. Confirm the current figure when you apply for the permit if you are moving a young animal.

Your district Veterinaeramt issues the official health certificate, and two things about that process surprise people.

First, the animal must attend. German offices examine the pet in person and establish its identity by reading the microchip, so this is not a paperwork-only visit. Munich states plainly that you must appear with your animal; Berlin says the same.

Second, the price is wherever your district sets it. Munich charges 8.50 euros for up to three certificates for one owner and can issue the same day once the requirements are met. One Berlin district charges between 41 and 615 euros depending on the time required, and recommends applying three to four weeks ahead. Same country, same certificate, a seventyfold spread. Ask your own office what it charges and how much notice it wants, early enough to act on the answer.

As on every third-country route, you supply the destination form. German offices hold EU certificates, not Qatari ones, so download Qatar’s model and bring it with you. Applications are lodged electronically through TRACES NT, which needs an EU Login the authority activates.

Qatar Airways is the only nonstop operator from Frankfurt and Munich to Doha, with roughly two departures a day on each. That is convenient, and it removes any choice.

Every pet on this route flies in the hold or as cargo, for two reasons that reinforce each other: Qatar Airways does not carry cats and dogs in the cabin at all, and Qatar itself requires pets to arrive as checked baggage or air cargo through Hamad International, the only authorised entry point. There is no version of this move where a small dog travels at your feet.

The airline’s limits are 75kg including the crate, a crate no more than 300cm in total dimensions, ventilation openings capped at 25mm for dogs and 19mm for cats, and a minimum age of twelve weeks. Snub-nosed breeds are refused, which combined with Qatar’s own ban on Boxers, Bulldogs and Boston Terriers closes this route to most flat-faced dogs from both directions at once.
