EU Pet Passport: the only document you need

Germany and the Netherlands both implement EU Regulation 576/2013. A valid EU Pet Passport recording your pet’s ISO microchip number and a current rabies vaccination is all that’s required for movement between EU member states.

Check the vaccination expiry date before you travel. An expired vaccination makes the passport invalid for cross-border movement. If it’s lapsed, your German vet can administer a booster, but allow 21 days from a first vaccination in a new course before travelling.

Breed restrictions to check

Both Germany and the Netherlands have breed-specific legislation. Germany applies restrictions at the Länder level (Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia, and others have specific banned breed lists). The Netherlands restricts certain breeds under the Ras- en Gedragskenmerken regulation, with Pit Bull Terrier-type dogs facing the strictest controls.

If you have a breed that might fall under restricted categories in either country, confirm the specific state/provincial rules before travel.
