Critical points
Lithuania requires special permits for certain potentially dangerous breeds, including American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Rottweiler, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, Tosa Inu, and their crossbreeds. These dogs must be muzzled and on a lead in public places. If you own one of these breeds, contact the SFVS at vmvt.lt to confirm current permit requirements before travel.
Vilnius Airport (VNO) is smaller than Western European hubs. Live animal cargo handling is available but confirm capacity with the airline before booking, particularly for large dogs.
Ryanair and budget carriers accept only small cabin pets. They do not handle live animal cargo in the hold.
The EU pet passport must be signed by an official vet. A passport issued by a private vet without official status may be questioned at Lithuanian border checks.
Breed permits in Lithuania: which dogs need extra documentation
Lithuania maintains a list of potentially dangerous breeds under its animal welfare legislation. Unlike Latvia’s outright Pit Bull import ban, Lithuania allows these dogs to enter but imposes permit and handling requirements once in the country.
The breeds affected include American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Rottweiler, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, and Tosa Inu, plus crossbreeds. Owners of these dogs must keep them muzzled and on a lead in public places. Some municipalities have additional local rules.
Before travelling, check with the State Food and Veterinary Service (SFVS) at vmvt.lt to confirm whether your dog’s breed is listed and what documentation is required. This step is separate from the standard EU pet passport process and applies after arrival.
Getting your pet from Germany to Vilnius
Lufthansa’s Frankfurt-Vilnius service is the most direct option for owners in southern and western Germany. The flight takes roughly 2.5 hours and Lufthansa accepts both cabin and cargo pets. The Frankfurt Animal Lounge handles cargo animals professionally if your dog is too large for cabin travel.
From Berlin, LOT Polish Airlines via Warsaw is a practical alternative. The Frankfurt-Warsaw leg is short, and Warsaw Chopin Airport (WAW) has regular Vilnius connections. LOT accepts cabin pets on its intra-European routes.
Budget carriers such as Ryanair serve the Germany-Vilnius corridor from Berlin and sometimes Frankfurt, but only for cabin pets. If your pet weighs over 8kg including carrier, budget carriers are not an option for this route.
